General Mach Discussion / Re: 2 Questions
« on: December 28, 2008, 01:49:08 PM »
As usual, the forum community comes through with excellent information, and I thank you all once again. Here are 2 more questions that I am now at the point of dealing with:
1.) Suppose I want to route out a flat, level area that is in the shape of, say, a star, in flat material, and I want to have fairly sharp corners. I will use the offset tool set for a 1/8th inch end mill bit, which will give me satisfactorily sharp points on the star. But the star is large, and I don't want to have to route the whole thing with a 1/8th inch bit. How do I write the program to allow for a tool change to a, say, 1/2 inch end mill?
2.)I have used a 1/8th inch end mill to define a work area on my table by drilling down into the table with the bit at the 4 corners of the work rectangle. I have zeroed the xy to the lower left corner of that rectangle by setting the zeroes at the place where I drilled that hole. I then drew lines on the table that touch the outside edges of each 1/8th inch hole. Should I change the xy zero locations to account for the center of the bit being 1/16th of an inch from the line? Will the software know to offset from that 00 location when I change bit sizes?
Thanks again, and Happy Holidays to All,
Bob

General Mach Discussion / 2 Questions
« on: December 25, 2008, 08:22:43 PM »
I was trying to run a test prior to cutting my first piece and I realize that I don't understand HOME. I figured I would design a small 3" x 5" rectangle, jog to the middle of the table and run the file in the air w/out the router on, but when I got there and tried to change the X, Y, and Z absolute home zero to that new location, I couldn't do it. I first clicked Machine Coordinates, then zeroed the axes, then clicked Ref All Home, but the Abnormal Condition light started blinking and when I checked the Diagnostics Page I found that the old home position hadn't changed. What should I have done?
Also, whenever I close Mach 3 I get a Fixture Save? query, even when I haven't loaded a Gcode file. What kind of fixture are they referring to?
Thanks again, Bob

Thanks, Dave, I'll give that a try. And thanks also, Hood, for all your effort.

Hood,
I had a computer pro come over and he has determined that the crv files that are being generated by VCarvePro are not text files. We loaded one of Mach's test  files scorpion.tap and it reads as Gcode.  The computer guy said that this *.tap file is a text file.

How do I turn a *.crv file into a *.tap (gcode) text file
or how do I export or save from vcarve to a *.tap file
or how do I open a *.crv file or a *.eps file or a *.ai or a *.dxf file from mach 3.  These are all file formats that vcarve exports to.

Am I supposed to run a third program that turns *.crv files or *.ai or *.dxf or *.eps into a *.tap file

What am I missing?

Please help.

On both computers I saved it to the desktop and then ran the install program. My browser is Firefox, and I think the other computer uses Firefox also. I tried both the link that Hood gave me and the download page from the website. I will try using IE.

Hi Hood,
Well, drove over to a friend's house and tried to download from there. Got the same error message, except that this time it reads, decompression error (#7)" instead of "decompression error (#5). I'm at a loss -- what do you think?
Thanx, Bob

Hi Hood,
Tried again, same thing. I'm wondering if the problem is with my computer, because I remember the same thing happening when I first downloaded Mach a month ago. I hit a decompression error and chose IGNORE, which may be the reason why I now can't import Gcode. I will try to line up another computer -- do I need to somehow transfer the license to the other pc to do this?

Brett and Hood,
Tried downloading from the top of the page and am getting error messages that say a "decompression error has occurred (#5). I then have the options to abort, retry, or ignore. I ignored the first 2, but I aborted after the third one. Please advise.
Thanx, Bob
