James,

We gave tried a number of different laptops over time here and few did work ( PP use). They were older laptops with a PP.
I had a 20 year old NEC ( went to recycle)  that worked a treat but was slow as a snail.

Mach shares time with Windows to control the machine and some just can 't be partners. Some generate / have a poor output pulse signal which causes problems. Just a few high level reason's why.

Get an external motion device for  laptop use and also have a dedicated computer for machine control.

Experiment as you wish...........

This forum can help you, I personally am not familiar with the Gerber machine.
You want to be able to control the machine using two different controllers.
So you need to understand both controllers. I know nothing about Gerbers.........also have no desire to search for the correct manuals / information.

So I would suggest you have a look at the available Mach videos, manuals, etc to get a flavor of Mach software.

To configure Mach you need to provide detailed information about your machine.
- Drives, motors, sensors, etc
- Mechanical aspects of how the axis is driven,
- Spindle info and how controlled / wired

Mach uses the configuration for control basics, inputs  / outputs, etc. and quite configurable.

Post all info and review for completeness before posting. You will get a better response if folks don't have to do any leg work.

And you should also understand that it's important to distinguish how the illness affects men or women.

A man can make and play with an empty box and be fascinated by it.
A women will be obsessed with putting stuff  in the empty box.

So it's nature, it's a just a Venus and Mars kind of thing, and must be accepted.  ;)

Just one other thing Tweakie you should be aware of..........

If retired, the medical description is clarified by " and the person doing it Need Not Justify It...... OR.......  make sense of it to anybody".  :D

There is no treatment for it, only time will cure it according to studies done.
Just carry on and eventualy you will run out of desire, room, or material.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Positioning problem in mach3
« on: July 13, 2016, 08:13:01 AM »
Just some things to check:
- Confirm  drawing is correct.
- Confirm that the gcode is correct.  ( post your gcode file and someone may backplot it to confirm it agrees with the drawing )
- If the above is ok  then it may be that you are loosing position during a move or it's you machine .....

From Gerber Manual:

G Codes, which are interpreted by the G Code feature (Requires the use of
Hyperterminal and the assistance of a Gerber technician.)

Note that there are different dialects of gcode, additional commands etc  for controllers. Not sure if how the Gerber controller would interpret them.

can it be connected to a Gerber Sabre 408?

I assume what you are asking is ..... Can you use Mach as the controller for the router?
Mach would need to be configured correctly for the router.

General Mach Discussion / Re: G82 Mach3 Lathe issue
« on: July 12, 2016, 08:04:12 AM »
Have not used Melee's lathe drilling macro's in some time. I used it for drilling small holes with  a live high speed drill mounted on the carriage.
What is neat about the macro is that you can index the spindle and drill on some radius or offset which provides for very accurate drilling in
or along the lathe axis without removing the stock. The pecking working great and adding some dwell time at a point during the cycle allowed
for the small bit to stabilize before doing feeds  at an extremely  slow feed rate.

Now for quicker and usual lathe drilling work I may use the Lathe Drilling Wizard done by DaOne and here is a link to the wizard:

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,16533.msg112079.html#msg112079

I added the wizard to my Lathe screen as part of a  wizard page:
Pick attached of that wizard.

One should always test any wizard before actual use.  ;)

Can you also point me in the direction of a good tutorial on the Mach3 macros? Again, I've looked and can only find references to the commands, nothing explaining what they really mean and how to use them. Mach3 macros for dummies (does it exist?)

It does not exist. If you do, or have done programming, then the learning experience will be rather quick.
I will be the first to admit that I am not the sharpest tack on macros, but, I learned a lot just by looking at all the stuff you will find posted in the Tool Box or screen sets, etc .
You be amazed at just how dangerous you can become.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Why Not The Same
« on: July 10, 2016, 11:54:25 PM »
Understand that the "same" program is a set of identical instructions that the controller ( Mach ) executes, but, the controller will take into account
what state it is in and where it is when those instructions are given.

I think you need to have a read of the Mach Manual, understand Machine Coordinates and Part Coordinates and work offsets, how to setup a job, etc.

CNC is not plug and play........

Read the manuals, watch the videos, etc to get a basic understanding.
