General Mach Discussion / Re: Syil C6 Lathe thread?
« on: October 05, 2008, 08:57:14 PM »
TEF9,
You can thread on your Sherline. If you have an old style motor then spindle torque may be a problem.
If you have a newer one then you will be able to thread but limited. Limited in the sense of cut depths.
Don't know your stepper motor torque but mine are only 125 in oz., rather punny.
The latest version of Mach V3.042.012 should be used as it seems to have the bugs worked out. I got lazy and didn't
get around to actualy cutting some threads today with that version. The Z movement will adjust itself to a  decreased spindle speed. Note that  you may have to use backlash compensation. The G94 / G95 looks good and the RPM readout is dead on in the latest Mach version. So like Hood said things look good for the punny users.

Attached is a picture of the the index on my Sherline lathe.

MODIFIED: The optical sensor i used came from my junkbox of stuff so i can't even tell you who made it.

LazyTurn / Re: LazyTurn
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:22:39 PM »
Vince,
No, you don't need to draw in the XZ plane.

I do not think you can change the axis definitions in Autocad or Microstation such that Z equals the X axis or for that matter Y equals the X axis when drawing. My CAD experts at work only laughed at me when i asked them to do a modificatioin to the dxf conversion tables so i could convert it that way. Looked at the 2" thick manual and gave up! I let that brainy idea die.

Just draw as normal the lathe programs will do the rest.

Lazyturn is not ready for use, use Lazcam Turn, and be ready to invest some time for learning it.

Vickle,
Never took it as a critique or personally. We are still friends of the hobby. Written words have a tone to them and with short sentnces / to the point sometimes comes across as harsh or hard to the reader. If you try something based on what's posted and it dosn't seem to work for you or the instructions are not clear, just post and may be able to help.

Spnar,
Do any machiniing yet?

Dajavu,
.030/240=.000125" per move, What is your standard for the 11"? Are you picking that up on your indicators?

LazyCam (Beta) / Re: Lazy Cam pain

Hi Vicke,
We have much in common as I also came to Mach for use as a controlling program for running a Lathe at a hobby level. Mach Turn dose a nice job of doing it. I tried the latest developement version of Mach along with the SS plug tonight and all I need is to have the backlash compensation done and a "winning" combination is in place. I think that will be in the near future.

I wish more people like yourself would jump in as there got to be more than just a handfull out there.

You underestimate the trend on CNC lathe users as you will not be a minority in the near future. The CNC lathe with software is here. But the software available for the hobbiest is few and far between in both price and functionality.

Will you pay? Sure, just like the milling, but at least you already have a controller along with functional wizards which provides almost instant capability. They didn't even exist just a short time ago. Now if you want to progress,
namely turning profiles,  then Lazycam will do it within limits. You want to get fancier, just pay! But then if Lazyturn
becomes a reality, you just may have something that you won't find anywhere else for the price.
So you realy didn't have to pay to play on the lathe. Just needed a fork and knife to be able to eat.
You can always learn to program the lathe code, but for me, that would be like eating with my fingers!
RIGHT OR WRONG?

LazyCam (Beta) / Re: LazyCam only ouputs 49 lines of g-code?
« on: October 03, 2008, 07:00:49 AM »
tamathumper,
When the file is  imported into into Autocad or Microstation it tells you that it is 3d and you can't manipulate
the file until converted  to a 2d if working in 2d. Each line or circle would represent a cut, boundry , etc which you need to define, delete depending on what you want to do. IE; A circle between two others could represent the toolpath  of
a ball endmill. Once coverted the circle's then become individual lines making up the circles, thus many inidividual cuts for
a simple toolpath.
Even though Lazcam imports the DXF it dosn't know what you want to do with each line until you define them for cutting. I have not fooled with Lazcam Mill ( just " exploring " it's use for turning ) and don't want to make assumptions about the milling and miss guide you. That said, try siimple profiles for manipulation, until you get a feel for what lazcam will do in regards to importing a file, how to define the toolpaths for cutting, etc. ( watch the videos).
Maybe duplicate what the wizards generate for milling and compare the generated gcodes. You can do a lot with the wizards. Soon as you get into
unique profiles you now need something more. Lazcam should satisfy that need.
Lazycam or any other program is not smart enough to automaticaly generate gcode for machining with out addtioinal instructions or definition.
Lazcam is Beta and undocumented, but, at least you have videos for milling giving instructioins on use. I would beliieve that although not a CAM replacement it is still a very powerfull tool for milliing.

tamathumper,
Just thought that I would  mention that your DXF is a "3D" file and not 2D.

tamathumper,
I just imported you dxf and posted code to Mach Mill. I have a licensed version.
As can be seen, it generated some 2100 lines of code. I can't speak for the mill end of
Lazycam and just how good the Beta is for milling. What else can I say.
