SmoothStepper USB / Re: Does Smoothstepper smooth acceleration?
« on: January 13, 2009, 06:07:04 PM »
tahustvedt,
Can only tell what i have experienced from testing and using the SS as compared to running off the PP.
This posting is from my experience only for my equipment, can't speak for anyone else, shouldn't be taken as
endorcing a product, and shouldn't be used to confince you of anything.
Using the SS i can run my machines at a higher velocity. It solved the problem of a poor pulse signal out of the PP which was due to on-board graphics. If you want speed, then have your system favor it or compromise speed to torque as you wish to accompliish what you want to do. As far as speed, the rapid increase was at least 2x
and up to around 4x with out skipping. Now i could get more speed if i bumped the voltage up and get more torque if the current settings were higher, thus POWER can be had in other ways. Big woop! I don't care to tear up my machine to impress anyone!

Quick look at the Hobby CNC site says:

"Idle Current Reduction to 50% when idle for 10 seconds. Can change this time delay. "

There should be no need for this when running a program. Take a look at your documentation
for your driver as i am not familar with them.  Let us know how you make out.

storenfwi,
You have my interest on this one. I use steppers and they "never power" down unless i manualy flip a switch
on my controller to disable one or all of them. I am not aware of any setting in MACH that would do that.
You may want to provide a little more info on the drives you are using and how long is a long time.

When you say power back up and stalls........... Ii am thinking that you are missing steps becuase of to high
an acceleration.  When you say long time.........if you have high current setting and they sit there a "long" time and get hot they can start to act funny.  Just quessing. Post some some more iinfo.

SmoothStepper USB / Re: Does Smoothstepper smooth acceleration?

Someone please correct me if what i say is wrong. Thought that in Quantum, the acceleration curve was not linear
like you currently seen in the motor tuning graph. So in quantum, you would have a more gradual approach on decel and accel towards a velocity. In that case even without the Smooth Stepper the machine would be smoother running. Probably more so at higher speeds. A pulse is a pulse,  and if they can be delivered better, as Hood said, you can run faster without missed steps. With in reason.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Inaccurate routing
« on: January 12, 2009, 05:29:00 PM »
BOB,
Like Vmax549 said, make sure your motor tuning and settings are correct.
Then do an accuracy check. A simple 1" dia circle will do as you can measure each quadrant thus checking
diameter and out of round. You don't even need to cut it and can just have a pencil in the Z axis.
Now try using your software to do an outside and inside profile. Maybe all is actualy working well and you have
some incorrect inputs when using the software.

LazyTurn / Re: LazyTurn

zeeschuim,
"All" can be found in Appendix A,B,C,D,E which supplements the LazyTurn manual.  ;)

The sentence:
Sharp corners are not good design in that they "introduce stress intensification factors" which downgrade the allowable forces and also affect cyclic design.

We designers and engineers have a language also. When doing a design analysis, maybe a finite element analysis
which could be inclusive of static, dynamic, vibration, thermal, seismic, etc.. , shape factors such as sharp corners or
changes in the profile would be considered and evaluated as to the impact they have on the calculations.  A shaft could be perfectly fine for a static loading of say a 1000 lbs but because the shaft has a sharp corner cut into it the allowable working load is reduced. Nicks and other imperfections in the shaft can limit the number of times the piece can cycle thru bending or whatever thus fail before one without the imperfections. So we don't put sharp corners from a design point of view unless really required.

Now, most tooling won't give you a sharp corner , and practically speaking the design would call out for a radius equal to a standard nose radius. Practically speaking you would not expect a program to allow you to cut a .1" corner radius with a .5" defined nose radius for a tool. Common sense applies. Now on the other hand, someone may be lazy and not to practical and dosen't like to create radius corners in a drawing and will let the chips fly where they may. So be it. The definition of stupid.............practical.............and genius  .................is subjective ..............and still eludes us today. :)

ART,
Relative to Lazyturn import capability,
Do you have any comments on using polylines?

Willem,
re: reply#768 & #771

I "exploded" the POLYLINE so the profile was converted to simple elements and saved it as a
ver 12 DXF.  When imported the profile was no longer cut off. Why "exactly" one polyline profile will work
and another won't i do not know.

APPENDIX "B" - CAD DRAWINGS AND COMMON MISTAKES

5.9 Compose the profile from simple elements.
so will add " USING A PROFILE COMPOSED OF A SINGLE POLYLINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED"

I never use and avoid polylines for a profile ( for CNC work). That's how I work, maybe it's
old fashioned and stupid, but.....
if you read Appendix "C" 2.0 DXF HISTORY you will know were i am comming from. No it dosn't answer
the question directly but gives insight on the matter.
