Cor,
Don't spend money on a card wthout looking at the pulse else you may just be wasting your money. See if it's a 5volt output as Jeff noted.

This is interesting because as i write this,my friend just finished putting together a pc and guess what! Yep same thumping sound as yours and i know it all to well. That said.
I went over and did an install, config, etc and his steppers worked fine. Today when he went to use it / next day......bad pulses. I fooled some and reinstalled the driver and the machiine worked fine until i changed an acceleration setting. And back came the bad pulses. Could not fix itno matter what i tried as i have been down this bumpy road before.

So you are not alone, Cor, the only difference is that for myself after manny hours of screwing around i just bought a SS and did away with the problem.

What I have posted before and will say again is that "YOU JUST NEVER KNOW if A PC WILL WORK THESE DAYS".

BTW my friends old slow dead dog 400 MHZ machince ran his machine just fine and no problems ever.

Stay tuned,
RICH

COR,
What make of computer and does it have on-board graphics?

If you can, look at the pulses out of the PP with an oscilloscope. I will bet you have ringing or even multiple spikes on the pulse. What i think happens is, the driver actually sees
two pulses in a hit or miss fashion,  and thus it sounds like a mallet / hammer is hitting the stepper motor.

If you can, try adding a different video card. Some computers allow you to jumper the on
board graphics out. That "may" not cure it. Other then that, i don't believe you can do anything about it.

You can use a Smooth Stepper with that computer and not have any problems.

Just check out the pulse before you get into spending any money on anything.
( BTW, i USE GECKO DRIVES AND THEY WILL NOT CURE A SCREWED UP PULSE, NOR ANY SETTING IN WINDOWS THAT I AM AWARE OF )

Can you post the code?
I haven't used all the wizards form NFS so I am curious.

What version of Mach3 and what version of NFS wizard?

You may want to make a post in the NFS thread or take a look there and see if anybody else has had a problem.

Is this the new computer or the one you were having problems with?

HUTCHISON,
If it was linear as Hood said just change the steps per unit to make it right. If it is not linear, is there a sweet spot that you would normaly work in? If you replace with rolled ball screws some of them are like .003" / foot , which granted is half of what you have, but they return in the opposite direction at that linear rate. So read the spec's carefully on the ball screws.
This is a good example of where you change the steps per unit to something other than what is calculated.

Kym,
Can you post a link to something which gives information on "LCAM2". You will need to properly configure Mach3 for
your drives. I would guess that it's just not plug and play. That said, provide some specific info on your controller
/ drives and surely someone can anwer your questions.
Does Larken have any specific info as i see they say it works with Mach?
Steppers or servos?

adprinter,
Don't use CorelDraw, so no help from here, but i would dump the program and spend $39 and buy a CAD program
and make the problem go away. I think RC ??????? made a post on one for that $ that does what he needs to do.
Just a suggestion.

General Mach Discussion / Re: CNC screw cutting lathe advice

bwprice100,

"Probably what I need to know at present is CNC screw cutting on a lathe possible with the MACH3 system?"

Yes, there are folks who don't don't seem to have any problems. They have stable PC's, HP on the machine such that
there is minor or no slowdown of the spindle when threading and good ball screws for quality of movement.

I would say, that for a buisness and also the fact that you don't want to or will not have the time for fooling around,
buy a complete CNC lathe with all in place and big enough for all anticipated work.  Along with that comes a price tag.
Even then, you will need to spend some time learning how to use it with your choice of software.

Hi All,
"Anyone working on a lathe index for use with Mach would be well advised to design something that can accommodate a multi slot wheel of some kind."

Actualy you may need two disc's one for index and another used for monitoring the rpm of the the spindle. Where this is all going or end up is purely experimental and it only relates to PP use. Not much activity currently going on.
There is only a few of us randomly fooling with it and wish there were more.
I haven't tried using an encoder, in this case, just one of the channels, but maybe in the near future.
Have some 128's so that would be 256 counts on one channel and haven't tested to see how it may limit rpm readout.

You could stretch or devide the encoder pulses using op amps. Just another book to read as i haven't fooled with them in years. Depending on the encoder /  5 volt supply, you "may" need to ampify the signal to change the pin state from a high to low.

Only guessing, but, until the current code rewriting of Mach gets done, probably won't see any new SS plugin or much pressure on taking care of threading or Turn / lathe  for that matter.  >:( So don't hold your breath!

Transition periods of change seem to be llike an eternity!  ???

Brian,
What is small? How big of a screw thread do you want to cut? How much money do you want to spend? Industrial use or home shop use? I use a Sherline and I would say anything past 20TPI is starting to tax it even though i have done up to 12 TPI and down to 80TPI. Nice for model work, but for the price I would retrofit one of the mini bench lathes putting ball screws and larger steppers along with the longer bed as it would be a lot more roburst than any Sherline, but, that's not out of the box.
All comes down to what you want to do with it and to what degree.
