General Mach Discussion / Re: Linking DXF origin with tool table
« on: August 10, 2009, 07:56:14 PM »
Hmm....
When you click "ref all home" and click each axis so the DRO's all read zero, then no offset exists and machine coord's = program coord's ( you can easily check ). Now when you bring in your program, or post from LC, the origin of posted file is equal to origin of machine so to speak, then all you need to worry about is that you have enough +x and +y axis table movement.

BTW, for a lot of circular stuff i do, manny times i use the center of the circle, but, all positive numbers are better to work with. But then, if i have to put it back on the machine and do something i have an easy shape to find the center of.

Hope i got it right,

BC,
I am playing with that also ( updating the manual  ;D ).  Not sure in my reply #15 / info 2. remark is
totaly correct. So will fool with it and try to find the logic or bug.
I am using the shapes file that i posted as it's easy to see what is happening.
There is also a definiton on what the plunge clearance does in the manual, thanks to VMAX.
But i also want to look at the generated code. I just want to check it out in a disciplined way.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Mach3 won't keep zero!
« on: August 10, 2009, 09:32:46 AM »
gaze,
You should turn off the power saving feature of the computer.
We run computers 10 hrs a day all year long and don't have problems with monitors going if that's your concern.

And here is a weird one, I recently had a real bad problem in that every time i loaded MACH3 along with using
a SS / video camera/Copycat i could only do so much and then would get a reset. Upon hitting the reset button
with the mouse the pc would crash. Long story short.......one of the memory chips went bad.

Never had memory go bad, but that was the culprit and it didn't do it when using a whole bunch of other programs all opened at the same time. After a few days it started crashing on boot up.

Not saying your memory is bad, but just thought i would mention this because i was realy stumped for a short time until the bad memory was identified and replaced.

Jeff,
I agree with you on fixing the machine.

Not an excuse for not having backlash compensation though!

If backlash will not be implemeted, in say some reasonable time period, then just so let it be stated
and all can move on. No big deal....it is as is.....fine product but missing something. I think that is very fair and reasonable.

You wouldn't show a candy bar to a kid and then take it away or eat it yourself!

I hold Greg in high requard and the SS. I also know that what seems simple can be a real challenge.
I also know that you don't want to waste time doing something if you know a change willl impact your work.

I TRUELY feel llike a PITA on the subject and will never, ever, address SS/BACKLASH COMP again.

LazyCam (Beta) / Re: how to make tool path for 3-D dxf file
« on: August 09, 2009, 11:32:29 AM »
I never tried to "sculpt" text in LC. It's beyond the intended use as a "basic" importer in my opinion or would be considered an advanced use of it.
BUT if you draw it in light of the machining then you can use LC to generate the code.
You should be able to draw out the paths based on a specific cutter and figure out the depths in CAD based on a v tool, but would require thinking about the machining and envisioning the outcome of the path. That's where advanced programs come in, like Gerry noted. It may not be too bad for a single letter but for a lot of text woud be a pain.
Now if you created your owne text alphabet, and did the letters to say to a common unit size , you could scale up and down and move them around to suite a future job. Put each letter on an indiviual layer and draw the paths so they come in as a chain. You will need an accurate machine, some moves will overlap other moves and as such can cause "indentations" would
detract from the effect you are trying to create.

As far as making a V tool with multiple cutting edges .........buy one. The time required to make it is not worth the effort. Single cutting edge would be a easier, but again time and effort may not be worth it.
If the tool is not made correctly ,you'll be disatisfied when it's used.

Just some thought's,
RICH

Who knows when that will be. He never implemented it and said he would over a year ago, probably a lot longer. Mach4 maybe wasn't even in the planning. It's a determinant to purchasing the SS and the WARP site is about dead. I also don't use the SS on one of my machines because of it. The SS is a good product, but for a lot of folks, it just kills the use or purchase.  Backlash comp is really needed for a lot of folks and considered fundamental. Fixing the mechinical problem is not a satisfactory answer nor an excuse for not having it even in MACH3.
Just my thought's on the issue,
RICH

Drools,
Some information:
1. Not having a license is not the problem.
If you don't have a LC license you will see in one of the buttons for the POCKET, OFFSETS, FOAM2D, TURN menu
     "Pro Demo.NoCode"
I can't say if there is anything else restricted.
2. You need to click the "set layer" button for the cuts, and when you do you will see a "change" in the display.
Just clicking the "Set All Layers" is not resetting the Z movements. That is why when you post to MACH you keep
getting the previously set Z. (Need to look at it more closely with something that has multiple layers.)

3. Like you said in the other post, highlighting all the text along with a backspace when in the setup menus will
cause the program to shut down.

I will get them into the manual as "blue text"  and also add a know "bug" page to the manual.

Drools,
I looked at your  LCAM. In the Layer menu You have a rapid height  of  .1" , so every rapid  ( the move from one chain to the next chain ) will be .1" above the Z=0  ref.  You have a tool picked and that tool is restricted to .0625" cut depth.  What is missing is that you have not told LC where you want the tool to start cutting and also how deep you want the tool to cut below  the Z=0 ref plane.  Note that the cut depth should be a negative number.

You don't want to delete all the references to the rapids. You will cut through the face of the piece.
A more logical way of machining the piece would have been to put the outline / boarder around the text on a  layer so you could cut that differently than the text. Then have all of the text on a  layer. But if you just want to machine it all the same then leave it as it.

You tell the LC how you want to machine the part. LC is really stupid , it only knows what you tell, but once you
tell it , it will do as you say!

Each one of the tutorials in the manual has something to say about layer tab and cutting.
