General Mach Discussion / Re: How do I ??
« on: September 13, 2009, 11:22:08 AM »
1. The question has been asked manny times. There are programs that will convert images to Gcode. LazyCam will, but, it is not covered anywhere and think it was epxerimental. I don't use convertering programs for images as i have them not suitable for may kind of work and have negative opinions on them.

2. You will recieve a license file and all you need to do is put it into the directory where Mach was installed.

I think the intent may have been...  that you can import a drawing that has text on it but that the text wouldn't
be imported. Some other programs do the same.IE; you don't want the detail title to import. Sounds logical!   ???

Here is something off the wall   ???   ???  so to speak that you may want to try fooling with:

N10 G0 X1.0
N20 F40
N30 G76 X.875 Z-1 P.001 J .030 H.030 I 30 C.1 B.001
N40 M30

What i am doing is tricking the thread cycle such that the pitch is very fine but the cut depth is what ever i want. (the
program dosen't know what you tool radius is )
It then does the passes down to the diameter wanted. Set your x axis location at 1.0. when the code is read by Mach it will generate all the paths. Not a canned cycle, but it just may be a shortcut.

BTW, NEVER ACTUALY CUT SOMETHING WITH IT, BUT HAVE DRY RUN IT!

See the "TUTORIAL #4 - TEXT" in the manual. The manual is in the members Docs. Text is also covered in the video.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Button style tool holder???

Yes,
I know craftmanship when i see.

Now artwork is a different story. Remember going back to a museum in Amsterdam. Trying to appreciate the noted painting, i looked at it sitting on the floor, laying on the floor, upside down while on my head, looking between my legs with back end towards the painting, looked at it every which way i possible could for at least a half hour. Finaly the person would takes care of the museum came over and asked if i had any comments on the paiinting as he just couldn't help notice me admiring the great work of art. I told him it looked like crap in my mind ten years ago, and now that i was more knowledgeable and mature, it still looked like crap to me. He said, since you are as nuts as the guy who painted it, here is a free pass for the next time you visit, and also enjoy your remaining five minutes in the museum. Can you imagine that!  :D

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Re: CNC CONVERSION - 6" ATLAS LATHE
« on: September 12, 2009, 11:33:55 AM »
JUST AN UPDATE ON THE CONVERSION
The ball screw was turned down on both sides. I used a chuck which uses 5C collets to hold the ball screw. Only went through 2 triple sided carbide inserts to machine down the screw. The screw hardening was at some 0.070” deep ( just a real PITA! ) on one side.

The motor mounting bracket was mounted to the carriage to confirm fit. The linear travel was tested to see if there was any binding post adjustment of the cross slide gibb and bearing preload. This was done by feel and manual turning the screw. The motor and ball screw were also aligned. I have dimensions on how to position everything thus very easy to do.

I figured I would do a preliminary check of the torque required to just move the axis. Only 11 oz-in is required. Figure #35 shows the torque gauge used for the check. It is very accurate gauge and comes in handy. Just one of those things that you get a bargain on over the years ( they are rather expensive! ).

Some trimming of the motor bracket was done along with providing access holes for the carriage gibb screws. I am waiting for bearings ordered.  A single bearing will be added on the motor side. So you don’t see one in Figure #36. Additionally the coupling will be replaced with a solid one since axial loading will
be very minor, if any at all, back into motor. The adjustable carriage and motor mount along with the screw bearing arrangement provide for precise coupling alignment.

I just had to know what the backlash would be. Steps per unit were calculated and slightly adjusted based on testing. Calculated was12690 and was adjusted to 12700. The adjusted steps per unit provided repeatable actual movements, both full and incrementally, when going in one direction over the full length of screw travel. Same for the opposite direction. The screw is a precision preloaded ground screw.
That done, backlash was checked ………..life will be good ……..only 0.0003”. So it seems that the x axis positioning can be used without any backlash compensation. I use a SmoothStepper and it doesn’t provide for backlash compensation in Mach. Backlash is a PITA when trying to cut threads  it doesn’t take much to screw up a small fine thread.  All starting to look promising, but,…….never know until you actually use the
lathe.

Steve,
Your rough cut piece must allow for a finish cut of the profile, such that, if the piece when placed on the table is somewhat angled releative to X or Y axis, the profile can still cut within the roughed stock. I would know a dimension from one of the points to the program origin.  Then you just place the rough piece on the table,
move to one point, ref all axis, now move the distance to the origin, rereference the machine, and your ready to go.

For a quick set up you may want to use set up a laser which will give you a visual for aligning the piece. Only a couple of bucks to do and woud save time.

Need to consider  how your going to hold the piece down as Gerry mentioned.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Simple Threading Wizard Problems HELP
« on: September 11, 2009, 03:48:38 PM »
No, your confused. There is nothing wrong with the gcode that the wizard generates. The generated gcode just changes the x & z axis locations for each cut of the thread based on what was defined in the wizard. Mach controls execution of the wizard gcode by sending out the appropriate steps and saying when the threading should start and stop and also monitors what is going on while the actual thread is being cut. The combination z & x ( angular ) move you are seeing is part of the Mach / controller.

In Mach, go to config>video  plug in and make sure its checked / enabled. I may also add that some video cameras don't seem to work. LOL
