General Mach Discussion / Re: Constant Surface Speed On The Lathe
« on: December 08, 2009, 09:30:23 PM »
Phil,
Never even tried CCS. Have both PP and SS available but have been using just the PP since i got the new computer. The VFD and motor is "holding down the floor" as i just set the speed with belts and all turns out just nicely. One day i will get sophisticated, but until then, think i'll just make some stuff for a change.

Now on the bright side of things, i must say that I have been using your lathe screen and like it. Need to have you put a few indicators  on the screen showing what is active.

Sometimes it's just fun to have some fun making something. Heck, a few more days and the nodel will be done.

I remember Brian saying that he would have the lathe stuff up to snuff by March. I think he just got the year wrong!  ;)

BTW, The SS was to have backlash done a year ago. Since then built a new lathe and bought a computer to fix the problem. Sometimes things just ain't worth waiting for , life is short, if you know what i mean! ;D

Sam,
Thanks for the info, forgot about his thread and they do some realy good stuff. Most of it is not miniture though.
Another project option would be a small surveyors theodolite,  i started one, but.......working optics, good grief.........

Jammerm,
The castings come as part of the kit when purchased and is Al. Frankly, I think if they sold the plans, it would be easier to make a lot of the parts out of a chunk of metal.
Never saw the miniture machine shop at the Henry Ford Museum. Go to some of the shows and you see a lot of them though.

Yep, i also am partial to the 44's and good grief had a bunch of them at one time until i decided i couldn't use them all at once. The burgler did me a favor!

I'll take a look at how much it can be scaled down before it won't be functional ( parts just become to fragile ) and was thinking  around 1/4 or 1/5 size or so.

You can add a switch that would protect from a loss in control and it can be movable / settable. But again you should not have the problem in the first place. As stated before, just don't exceed the capabilities of
"YOUR" machine.

Carbide cutters. Vary the depth and feed rate to address the cutting. ie; cut thru the wood and then take a shallower cut thru the glue joint. Experiment some to find out how long the cutter remains sharp and correct feedrate for what your doing.

Brett,
An Elf may be more appropriate for running it since Santa is just a supervisor.  ;D
Hope to have it done by Christmas.

The next model will take some time but should be more interesting. The project is going to be a
scaled down version of a Coonan 357 Mag or model 629 S&W 44 mag.  Not sure how small you can go and still
maintain functionality. I can get diverted rather quickly.   :D

Just used my mill with ver 3.042.032, steppers, and backash compensation the other day and all worked well for some simple pockets I was doing.

Shown are the ball for the universal joint, and the cutter arbor with draw bar.
The ball is only 3/16 inches in diameter. The .062" hole perpendicular to the the stock is drilled, then the stcok is placed in the lathe and the hole on axis center is drilled, now a ball radius is done on the end of the stock and then another partial
radius done leaving about .010" thick shafting. Very fine cuts are required and all goes well you have a pecfect ball with four holes in it. Material is C/S for the ball. Yes, you could just take the temper out of a ball bearing and drill it, but then, it wouldn't have been an interesting piece to make.  ;)

Just a few more close up pictures of the handle, feed clutch assembly, universal joint ( still need to make another set as they are a different size), and some parts in the making. The ball for the universal joint was cnc'd on the lathe. I attached a picture of the cutter used to cut the slots in the bed. Some things just need to be made.

Show"N"Tell ( What you have made with your CNC machine.) / M1 MILLING MODEL
« on: December 06, 2009, 07:55:55 PM »
Hi All,
Here are some pictures of a model I am currently working on. Started it a year ago and figured it's time to get her done.
All the the shafts and threads were done on the cnc lathe. Another 24 hours and it should be done.
