General Mach Discussion / COMPLEX THREADING WIZARD
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:32:55 PM »
Here is a link to a threading wizard which i didn't know existed.

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=13434.0;attach=18904

I took a few moments and found a few things that you should be aware of .

1. In the thread selection, if you pick a ISO MET 60, the calculated depth is incorrect for a sharp V tool.
IE; pitch=.050 ,external thread, if tip radius is 0.0000, the depth should be ( 0.866 x  P= 0.050 x .866=.0433).
There is no definiton for a "Standard full profile" and the tip radius it provides is .0072.  The end value of the X distance for the thread uses ths value and will be incorrect. Just a heads up.

I will note that the "Calculator " does the depth / x end diameter correctly.

If you input the "end" value correctly the g code generated uses that value.

2.Not sure if TEST ( True / False ) is working correctly. I figured it woudld generate a g32 or g76 type of gcode posting.

« on: December 22, 2009, 08:13:49 PM »
Another threading wizard was posted recently. It is called "Complex Threading(Lathe) . I incorporates some of the features which are described in the manual for the other two wizards and then some. Here is the link:

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=13434.0;attach=18904

I have started a new thread about it.

FWIW,
A little off thread.
Haven't done much peck drilling, but have tried out the macros that Melee posted. The latest updates include macros for the mill. See link below. The ones on the lathe worked here and need to check the mill ones out.
I will say that if you are going to peck drill the axis doing the pecking needs to be solid ( that's why i don't do much
peck drilling on my Atlas mill ( quill just has too much backlash ). I did experiment with the lathe ones and will tell you they worked great. Peck drill little .020" holes and rapid peck drilling where the return to start the drilling is within .001" and if bad ....broken drill.

My only point is that if your axis is not accurate, has backlash, or just dosen't work very well ( for whatever reason), peck drilling may not be a something to do.

Do you want to turn the diameter down on a lathe? If so, that is no problem and you can take as many light cuts as you wish.  You can do it manualy using the MDI line or use one of the lathe wizards to generate the gcode to turn the piece down.
Maybe I don't understand you post.......

cpayne,
For this PITA file just take one read of the attached file before going to bed and then
apply  the verbage  to the attached Lcam.  :D

I have seen this kind of problem when trying to do a pocket. When it dosen't work, which can be due to a whole
bunch of things, the drawing, the tool, practical machining approach, corrupted file. Sometimes it's just better to take a different approach and it will get pocketed. BTW, i tried to pocket it with a different program and it was even worse. You won't pocket something if you can't create an offset for the profile. So that is always my 2nd option after a check of the drawing.
Please note that i wanted to do this using  an 1/8" end mill. with smaller cutters it probably would have been easier i guess.

Overhang is not functional. Finish is the amount of stock you want to leave for another finish pass. So you would clean out the area and then make a finish pass.

BTW This particular profile is a PITA!
