General Mach Discussion / Re: Question to all having Rotary Axis

will it rotate one revolution and become '0'
  YES

They both work as you have highlighted. Now only one comment that you should try. Are you in G90 / incremental distance or  G91 / absolute distance mode? As that makes a difference.

EXAMPLE:
G91   ( INCREMENTAL)
G01 A90 F20 ( WILL MOVE TO 90 DEGREES AT THE FEEDRATE )
G01 A90 F20 ( WILL NOW MOVE ANOTHER 90 DEGREES SO YOUR AT 180 )
G01 A180 F20 ( WILL NOW MOVE ANOTHER 180 DEGREES )

Just do your codes in the MDI line and watch the DRO's, or jog the axis in either mode and see what happens.
Place a G90  or G91  on a line ahead of some simple code and see the difference. Play some and you'll be a pro in no
time at all with the experience gained.

As far as the G90 or G91 goes, it's like ice cream, pick your flavor for programing, or get a double dip of both but you decide which is on top. ;)

Ken,
Good project. I have one made by Royal called ESSET, don't use it too much but can come in handy when needed.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Lathe screen, what do you want to see.
« on: January 10, 2010, 06:22:24 PM »
There are going to be lot of user preferences on the lathe screen since everyone works differently or has a different
variation of  the basic lathe.

I have been using Phil's screen and it is much more user friendly and has some nice additions / changes  that
were done. The current standard one sucks ( i am sorry, but once you use Phils screen and don't have to jump all
over the place you would understand what i mean ).  Visual switch mode status , enlarged screen fly out on the
cycle / main screen, threading task / indication / and turn wizards with a click, additional buttons for jogging and
visual status, additioinal Axis DROs and coordinate status at a glance are just a few things that come to mind on Phil's screen.

So i am going to get a little long winded here and feel free to question for understanding

How would you have the screen?
- must be different at a glance that it is a lathe screen
- no "flashy" screen colors, what is important stands out or indicates in a non irritating way
- not like the current standard one, but tabbed screens like the mill
- step change the screens ( other than the main operating screen) such that it's it visualy guides you into
detailed setup via flyouts ( example; a single tabbed Setup screen would visualy show the lathe along with
coordinates, homing controlled point, offsets / tool table, at a high level. A click on a  particular subject area invokes a
fly out with the associated particulars for data input.  The whole intent would be to make it somewhat user intuitive
such that the big picture is grasped and work your way down to the associated detail.
- yep, include additional items from the mill screen
- tries to address the future ( like optional touch screen ), maybe some macro buttons, other / additional axis use)

What would you want on the pages?
- Phil's screen could be used as a good start for an operating screen to enhance and modify
- depends on some yet to be determined defined logic
- ability to use a rotary axis ( i think in the future, as cnc lathe users increase you will see things added to
the lathe to increase it's versatility....)

How many different pages?
- Operating screen, touch screen, setup screen, tool screen, diagnostics, advanced screen
( minimize the number of screens, but how manny will be what can be shown on the screen)

Similar to Mill layout or similar to the way the lathe screen is now or if neither what would you like?
- simular to Phils main screen and incorporating all relavant stuff from the mill to enhance
So a combination of both but different and better?

Now if we could all get together around a keg of lauger i am sure it could be rationalized out in one evening ....

would like to figure out if they can be moved around to suit

I don't know, Russ, would have to play around after the tabbing was created using other tools in LC.

You can't move a chain, not precisely since you need do it via a mouse move, the XY move dosn't work if i remember corrrectly. You can't move an entity.

So if you were to do partial chain moves, or selected deletions of a many tabbing entities which were created and join them, then they can moved around in a somewhat round about way .........easier to just draw the tabbing. Or if you wanted to have a tab start and end at some particular location, use lines on a seperate CAD layer move those created chains to the tabbed layer and join as you wish......again easier to just draw the tabbing.
Hmm........."LC IS NOT CAD PROGRAM" qouting myself !

Russ,
I would think of tabbing as the breaking line for bending something or maybe knife cutting marks in balsa
for breaking out shapes. On the other hand you could use it to get cuts on a third axis. I would need to look at the generated code. So what the user would need, based on the chosen settings of tabbing, is what to expect along
a line, shape, etc. and then apply that to whatever they may be trying to do. Of course you also can always do it a different way with just lines and assigning cut depths or offsets. Same old story, you have a tool to do something how do you want to apply it to the task. In that case it could be an automated way of doing something and no need to it in CAD.

This is the first post in a year that someone asked about it. I can probably sit here for 24 hours fooling with tabbing  trying to find where it won't work or is flawed. Heck, only going to guess that 300 hours of my time went into the LC manual. So in that light, a "quick and dirty "  basic tutorial on it's functionality would be easy and would leave the practical application to the user.

Think you said the magical word, namely "approach".  It's a killer of a word, when you think about it. Since it implies how a user will utilize the software to do something and it's just not possible to anticipate. So "a way" is better than NONE even if it's not the best way. In fact that's the really hard struggle part in doing a manual / tutorial since you want a blend of here is how it works, here are the shortcomings, here is a tested approach, and then practical application at a low or advanced level.

So rather than rambling on and in consideration of the above, sometime in the future, I'll add a tutorial on tabbing use even if it's loose...........poet and don't know it.......... ;)

Paul,
You can draw the offset in CAD along with the profile, assign each to their owne layer. LC will keep the layer names as chains  on import. Unenable or delete the a chain you don't want to do anything to. Try tabbing and see if it works. Not sure if tabbing is an advanced feature of the pro version.  ???

Russ,
Thanks for the step by step info. Povides a basis for a tutorial.  ;)

This is the best help i can give ( since I never fooled with tabbing much).

Create a number of offsets, and then rename the offsets to tab1 , tab2 , tab3 etc.
Now unenable say all except Tab1 chain. Now do a tabbing to it, and keep a few notes on what happened.
Unenable tab1 and enable the next and do a different tabing. This way you will know the effects and can quickly
find out how the Tabbing behaves and see what the logic is.

FWIW,

All of the 73 pages of info from that posting are rather summarised in the Threading on The Lathe writeup in Members Docs.

Timing is currently no longer functional. You only use index with single index slot,so disable the timing. The turn diagnostics is now outdated as of Rev 32 and 33. Do not enable the plug in until its fixed in the future. And don't use some of the other experimental plug ins you will find posted. Timing for threading  is based on readng spindle rpm and
although haven't even tried 034 or 035, don't think the threading plug was fixed . Go to the last two or three pages of the Problems Threading on the Lathe thread as there may be info relative to you.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Rotary Axis Help
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:47:13 PM »
Richard,
Back to normal now.   :)
Like Jeff said, "I am assumning  If your 4th axis is your lathe spindle, it will need some feedback from a servo motor with encoder or a stepper motor. This is needed to know where it is positioning in relation with the bed or cutter." So additionial config is required
in addition to what was posted.

Do have any feedback? What kind of motor are you using?
If no feedback, and A is rotary, then the feedrates shown will be useless , some of the rotary settings won't work, and coding and setup may be better done via a linear setup. A single index won't work to well, this is especialy true if the spindle rpm is slow or your indexing. In my case, for what i am doing, turning at just a few rpm ( 10 rpm max and 1-5 will seem normal in the moves), and my setup is linear.

Just a heads up, ;)

Will Rev4 be released with some of lathe changes requested?
