General Mach Discussion / Re: threading?

My question is  "Has anyone got Mach3 turn or mach4 to screw cut without having to have an electronics expert on hand."

YES :)

General Mach Discussion / Re: Carbide Create with Mach 3
« on: December 08, 2019, 05:20:07 PM »
You don't need any fancy cad / cam  program to do engraving work.
For quality engraving work the secret is producing a quality cad drawing of the engraving work by using arcs and lines minimizing the number of lines and arcs used. Engraving at a higher level is a form of art. When done in this manner it will reduce the amount of generated gcode and machine time. You have total control over what you want to accomplish.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Mach3 Turn Rear Tool Post
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:07:56 AM »
The tool table defines if one is using a front or rear tool post. Never mix the definition of
in the tool table by having some front and some rear. If memory is correct, rear tool offsets
are stored in G55. Mach defaults to G54 on start up.

See attached picture as it shows the difference in the X axis positive direction for a front and rear
tool post.

Have a read of the Mach3 Lathe Manual,

I created one and posted it for the 3page lathe screen.

Thanks for the reply Tweakie as I took some time and I was about to post some good help for this user.

Eduardo,
Consider doing what is right since it has many benefits!

General Mach Discussion / Re: How to correct losing steps?
« on: November 25, 2019, 05:10:10 AM »

1. Confirm your steps per unit using the axis calibration of MACH3.
2. How much backlash do you have in the axis?

Post your xml file that you are using.
Post the code that you are running.

What is acceptable practice is subjective. As a hobbiest you are the boss of your machine shop and can do as you wish. If you worked in a shop you would find that they have typical procedures which you should follow. That said the following higher level sequences should be considered.

1. Confirm that the CNC lathe is configured for how you want to work and is functional.
2. All the lathe tools that are available for use should be defined in the tool table.
3. My words ....... Reference the lathe. Referencing a lathe is just defining to Mach3 where the lathe
center is located  relative to the tools. ie; Machine Coordinate X =0.
4. Set home location. Home can be anywhere but logic implies that it should be away from the
stock such that any tool to be used will clear the the stock.
5. Define the work offset. That is the distance ( G54 work offset ) from the tool to the center / face
    of the stock.
(Understand that usual gcode for the lathe assumes that X and Z zero is the basis of the gcode       and that the gcode is also based on using radius or diameter mode.)

How do I do the above?
I will always just check basic functionality of cnc lathe before using it and know what modes are active. The tool table is populated via probing, and once done, no need to fool with the tool table. Then I probe to find the lathe center. Then I set an appropriate home position. Usualy I will insert the
stock into the chuck before setting home and minimize the tool travel to the work.

Sorry,no plans on sharing my screen set.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Cutting wrong dimensions in only one spot
« on: November 01, 2019, 05:23:18 PM »
So your CAD file agrees with my backplot of the gcode you posted.
So it's not a gcode problem.

Do what TP said in reply 22. Have the machine draw over the full size print using
both G61 and G64. That will eliminate any doubt on those modes.

Someting that I would try is changing the Gcode to get rid of the two G01 moves.
Join the arcs such that there is no  small lines between the before and after arcs.
Arc difference will only in ten thou's of an inch probably!

Seems like the machining goes off path because of  G01 X-0.305 Y1.503
or the G01 X0.787 Y1.260. Easy to change and paper plot to check!

Attached is a dxf drawing made from a backplot of the gcode you posted.
Suggest you print the cad file full size and trace your actual machines path on the print.

You can also compare original drawing to backplotted drawing.

I home first and then set the G54 offset to the part. Said differently, the  software is told where the tools cutting edge is located and I define to the software where the part to be machined is located. KISS!

That can be done a number of different ways and I use a custom screen to make it all simple.
I set up manually using probing to find the lathe center, the part, and tool offsets.

Now as Carrot Head once said.....it's not how you pick your nose but rather where you put your buggers that is important!
So home / reference / cutting edge of tool is Machine coordinate X&Z=0 and safely away from the end of the stock such that the longest tool offset clears the stock. The G54 offset is the distance from the cutting tools edge to the part.
