There is a "scientific method" since  there are programs that do all the calcs based on the physicals of the machine. Or you can do the calcs manualy as an engineering exercise. But calculations are only as good as the assumptions used and info in the calcs, and finaly the understanding of what the calc
is telling you.

So practicaly speaking, trial and error ( which dosn't take long to do  anyway ) is a perfectly fine way to do it.

What I have done is after the steps per unit are correct, i then find the max velocity i can get and reduce it to allow for cutting etc, then with that velocity setting i do the same for acceleration.  This way there is headroom in both the velocity and accel settings for the work to be done.
Then some machining tests are done for the worst case of material etc to affirm there should not be a problem for the work that i normaly do.
Which lately seems like not a heck of a lot!  :D

General Mach Discussion / Re: Possible lazycam issue

Jeff,
Don't think you will get a better definition than the one i defined in the manual, namely, Autoclean and Clean are both the same and just removes any extraneous data on import of a file.  So I am thinking it should not should not affect the gear profile that will be used to generate the code.

How about posting the following:
- DXF file of the gear as drawn in CAD
- The generated Gcode, but "only" for the gear profile from kcam or whatever program was used
-               "                                            "              from LazyCam

Then we can compare all three and see if it's a difference in produced gcode of one program to another against the original drawn profile.

Glad you got it sorted out.  :)

BTW, I think the manual said pulse width >1.2us irrelevant if it is working now

VectorEngineer Cad Software
Just took a quick look at the site and seems like it will do what you need, if purchased, since  the free one dosn't save files  as a dxf.
Other than that i know nothing about it. I use Microstation or Autocadd and nothing else here.

machined in its position
Just draw the profile with the center line of the face at X & Z =0. There are a few rules which are all covered in the LT manual along with other tips, see Appendix "B".

If you swap the axis, and the problem  is not mechanical, then you will see the problem go to the Y axis.
Note that you have implied that there is no problem with the Y axis.

Suggest you swap the cables and see if the problem is duplicated on the y axis.

I get the feeling that it may be mechanicaly related to the x axis due to a combination of backlash, axis system , and infuenced by velocity.

Mike,
Take the time and learn a little CAD......
Learn the following:
How to draw a line, a circle, and an arc.... and be able to connect them together and save them as a dxf. Don't care what program you choose
That's basicaly all you need.
I don't know of any wizards that get you a profile since most wizards are meant for a specific machining task and need to be pieced together.

You will be hard pressed to find anything worth a hoot for free relative to the lathe and if you do let me know as i have yet to find it.

Hopefully LT will have a finish cut available by the time you come up to speed. There is a manual for LT in Members Docs covering the entire thread on LT.

FWIW,

BTW Mike,
Suggest you have somebody pre drill / bore / ream the handle before doing the outside contour.
