General Mach Discussion / Re: What Do You Think?
« on: October 07, 2010, 06:55:29 AM »
JIM V,
Just looking at the link text i noticed that its for an emachine from Best buy. Be very aware that you won't get a cd of the operating system. If they say yes, ask to see if it's a serial numbered official Microscoft CD, you only get a repair cd. That can turn out to be a real PITA later. Just a heads up ......
BTW, you will  go in circles with Best and Microsoft over who is repsonsible for supplying the cd, and 4 weeks later maybe you'll get one! Same goes
for other suppliers in that retail market.

jjanes,
Both ways will work, but, you still need to define machining parameters to the profile. LC "sort of" checks if the tool is not correct.
The only time i do the offset in CAD is when it just will not do an offset and there are only a few times when that happens.
If you are doing multiple machining tasks on a part LC will generate Gcode for alll of them otherwise you end up piecing the multiple steps together
and need to add the rapids to the code. Your choice on how you want to do it.

You clean the file, then select the complete gear profile, then click the offset tab. You first select a tool and the tool diameter must be able to cut the profile, ie; if it is too big in diameter then LC will  create the offset, but, the created offset would start to exclude that which can't be machined with the large diameter tool. This is not a CAD program in that you are scaling something but rather you are giving machining instructions that need to make sense. That said, you the select outside and click Create offset. LC will create the offset and the offset is shown in the project information. Select the original profile and un-enable it, then select the offset created by LC ( by the way you can change the name of the offset if you wish) and now go to the Layer Tab in the bottom of the screen. This is where you define depth of cut for the selected tool and plunge clearance and apply it to the layer.
Note that the cut depth should be a negative quantity ie; -1.0 for 1 unit total depth cut.

All explained in the manual .......Tutorial #1 and see Tutorial # 6 about plunge clearance. The manual is located in Members Doc's.

BTW.....Post the DXF file.

I assume that you have Mach configured correctly for the Z axis movement.

vadude,
You need to select the layer which represents what you want to machine, and then, for that machining task define the
tool and cut depths in the layers tab which located on the bottom of the screen. All in the manual....do tutorial #1

Brett,
Glad the write ups helped as that is what they were intended to do.

DAlgie,
How about posting them here and i will put them in Members Docs. I don't remember trying them .

BTW, His peck drillng Macro's can be found in Members Doc's. There is one for the lathe and mill. Make sure you read the "read me file"
before using them.

Newfangled Solutions Mach3 Wizards / Re: Lathe wizards collection
« on: October 03, 2010, 06:16:00 PM »
I am not aware of any wizards out there for doing a profile. In fact, there is not much at all for free reguarding the lathe
other than LazyTurn that are worth anything. LazyCam requires  the pro license for the lathe module. After those you need to spend
money for lathe cam programs which are not cheap.

LOL,

Melee left the site some time ago, for whatever reason and don't know why, removing most of his posts.
For roughing gcode on the lathe you may want to have a look at LazyTurn. Hopefully finishing output will be done this fall.

Quote
when I detect I'm missing position, so I can use the external hardware I have to move back to where I should be
Since I would only be a few pulses out of position

What i have found is that the position indicated based on "pulses" by the Mach DRO is reliable.  If the PC is doing it's job
then Mach is doing it's job in reguards to the position. Pulses relate to position, but......there are other influences both
electrical, mechanical , and axis tuning which come into play. When you say you are missing a few pulses, I ask
myself...... how does he know? What is the basis of a "few"?

Let me clarify based on some testing which we did when doing threading tests.

A pulse counter ( measures to parts per million / custom made ) was hooked up to simulataneously measure pulses in five places
and could show the delta difference between the readings ( "P"  in red). Three indicators of axis location ( blue color) are shown ,
but a measurement based on a standard was done. Now to relate all the data can be tricky since the axis system comes into play.
So one needs to know what he is relating the data to and the variances of the all items in the "system" .

Simply put, when you get into finding or measuring small number of pulses/ movement it can get very demanding and most will not even
have the know how or equipment to do it ( including myself ) correctly.

A little off the thread .......See attached pic  ;)

You may want to have a look at CopyCat. You move the axis using a web camera ( dosen't have to be a camera ). It tracks your moves and generates the gcode. Additionaly there are edge and center finding  routines built into it. You can find a wirte up on how to use it in the Members Docs.
