Claude,

My 50-50-50 rule for backlash setting which you may want to consider.

50% - The max velocity is 50% of where your steppers will start to skip ( in Motor tuning )
50% - Set the shuttle Wheel setting in configuration to .0050  to .050 ( .5 too slow ) ( in Config )
50% - Backlash speed % of max ( in config>backlash )
This is a good starting point and refine upward.

Do you mean the X axis has backlash?
Lathe is usualy X and Z axis ( no Y axis ).

A scaled down S & W 629. Still have 40 hours of drawing time and after spending 8 hours in front of a computer screen

There is a jumper block on the drive  ( need to remove the cover ) and there is a jumper that is specific to size 42 motors that should be in place.

My controller consists of  four Gecko 201's and my power supply is 30 amps at 36 volts FWTW. The filtering can be more, but, not enough is not good. As already stated proper amperage  is required.

A few tell tale signs are as follows.
IF the amps are too low the steppers won't move, if the amps are border line they will skip, if the amps are too high for the stepper
they will work fine until they get hot and then they can act very strange and unreliably. I get reminded of this since i switch different setting resistors depending on what machine my controller is used for.

You can lower amp requirements depending on how the motors are wired ( if its possible), but, then that's a trade off of stepper preformance.
But the 10 amp supply may still be marginal.

Do contact Gecko about the inductance isssue Hood brought up and reply back on what they said.

Missed the point of my reply. You will find info on those sites on how to evaluate the affect of different diameter screws
when used at different speeds and supported differently. There are charts or you can do the calculations and that provides you
with an engineered approach with answers rather than subjective recomendations.

What Gerry says is correct.
Now you can set up your "keyboard" to be the opposite.
Let me clarify before the heavens bestow bolts of lighting upon me............

I have the keys / xbox reversed sometimes, but for a good reason, ie; namely when tracing  something using a video cam since
the image is reversed.
