Works in progress / Re: THE LATHE PROJECT-2011 - THREADING WIZARD ONLY
« on: January 09, 2011, 11:53:20 AM »
Just a quick overview of threading wizards.

There are three threading wizards for Turn as shown by the attached pics.

Actualy two since  the Complex Threading Wizard  is not really supported and Brian would like to see it
declared a myth. ;D  The complex wizard is just that, namely very complex in that it tried to provide  three pass types along with
three cut types and two infeed types  and additionly many different types of threads.I believe there are some bugs in it,
but frankly if it all worked i would probably use it. Not for a novice and unless fixed ,tested, and
documented ......... don't think it should be considered for the new lathe screen.

The G76 thread calculator is included a Mach installation.

The Simple threading wizard and Quick threads are somewhat similar with Quick threads providing more options.
The user has choice on which wizard to use via selection in the  Wizard Tab.

Here is my high level take on the lathe screens posted in reply 1 & 2.

The 1024 that comes with Mach Turn requires the user to go back and forth between screens ( numerous "clicks" ) to use. I can't speak for the intent of how it was initaily set up and seems that the
thought process was to set up the piece, manualy use and then use the cycle screen for actual running. The diagnostics stands on it's owne. There is a  Flash version of the screen.

The Blue and Silver screens are just an enhanced visual remake of the 1024 screen set. Same layout. User can have it in two different colors.

Softselect screen provides for a single screen but lacks some of the operational functionality of the other screens.

Phils screen combines the 1024 screen sets, adds another axis, and a whole lot of functionality in the screens. It eliminates the need to go back and forth between screens  and provides
for a larger fly out graphics screen ( not shown in the pic). Button clicks are minimized to use it.

Scotts screen is an improvement on the 1024 screen but lacks some of the things available from Phils screen.

Initial thoughts are to combine features from Phils screen into Scotts screen set. While we are  at it, may as well tweak it more to get the best of the best and TRY to satisfy some of the remarks
which are posted in the first reply.

When i get a chance I'll post a more detail comparison list.

SO WHAT SAY ALL YOU LATHE USERS?

The wizards allow for individual machining tasks to be done.
I don't use Bobcad, it's a cam program, and  figured that you should not even need to use a wizard to define the machining and generate the code.

Works in progress / THE LATHE PROJECT-2011 - THREADING WIZARD ONLY
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:21:47 PM »
This thread is strictly limited to threading wizards to be reused / combined / created ...whatever .....for a new lathe screen .
I desire not to have the threading ones mixed with other wizard updates going on.
This post will be modified to include info on the wizards and provide for discussion prior to including them into the lathe screen.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Power Supply Unit
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:25:40 PM »
FWIW,
Common mistakes:
1. Not considering the future use of the controller
2. Inadequate power supply
3. Second rate / problematic drives
4. Inadequate stepper motors

So you buy all at a bargain and save $A.....
Then you rebuy and to get what you needed or wanted in the first place $B

So $B - $A= may be nothing but agrivation and wasted money

Take you time, build the controller yourself, buy once and save money, know how it all works and can repair it, ....nice good feeling........$ cost in the long run = priceless

You CAN do it all......, ;)
