General Mach Discussion / Re: Need help with basic understanding

Dan,
Have a look at the attached pic as it shows what is being exported based on your drawing. It really leaves something to be deisred and is no wonder that LC or some other porgrams will be confused. I strongly suggest you have a read of the LC Manual.

Gianni,
There is a 50 line limit in LC if you do not have a Mach license and also to use additional features in LC you will need a Pro license for LC.
What did you try to do in LC?

Dan,

how the coordinate system on a XY table actually works
Depends on how you have your machine setup. You can set your 0,0,0 anywhere you want.
Have a read of the Mach Mill manual.

Quote
software produces the g-code with coordinates
In general the software will look at the dxf, it contains the location of all the entities which you have
drawn and extracts that data on import. Best example is to save a file as a ver 12 DXF and look at the
file with Notepad since it's a text file. You can't do that with later dxf versions and they will contain additional
info on what was contained in dxf ie; the third axis locations etc. In general you now must define what you
want to do with each entity that was drawn, no software is a "mindreader".

Quote
will the circle at the end actually be 10cm diameter
Well it depends if the program used outputs the file as vectors based on precise data or as vectors
based on screen pixels/units, whatever. You want to use a vector based CAD drawing program and
will remark that not all programs generate dxf's exactly the same and some are just outright terrible at it.

[qoute]how do you calculate how many steps per mm the machine is[/quote]
Try the calculator in Members Docs or use the axis calibrator in Mach to check.

Can you post your DXF file of what you have drawn?

How would I go about checking them (lead screw) for accuracy?

If you have a 1" indicator you would just take any backlash out and then set the DRO and your indicator to zero, then, make say .050"  moves
in one direction and see how close each move is to the indicated position. You can plot deviation from the norm is so desired.
Then go the other direction and see what happens. Don"t be suprised if the lead varies on one side of the screw as compared to the other.

On this end I have a 40X optical alignment scope with optical measurement capability to .0001" and use a calilbrated scale so measuring quickly along the screw ( even to 36" length ) is easy for me and thus i can profile the complete screw without resetting anything.

rick,
I always align my cutter to an edge or the center of a hole. Thus you have a repeatable point to work from during set up.

General Mach Discussion / Re: CAM recommendation, other than CamBam
« on: February 19, 2011, 12:10:28 PM »
Rick,
I'm with Hood. There is a fair amount of software out there and one needs to really try them out before purchase. I thought CamBam was rather good
and without some of the common quirks, but, i only tried it out a long time ago. You never know what you will get into with CNC. I use LazyCam a lot and for the most part it satisfies my needs, but, i also wrote the manual for it , so have a rather good flavor of when something is screwy and can work around the problem without too much grief.

Since like you, I have rather good CAD capability and can generate 3D out of Autocad i went with MeshCAM for 3D machining and so far I am happy with it.

So think about what you may end up doing as in the long run what is pricey now may turn out to be more economical in learning time  and money spent in the lung run.

The problem with trying things out is that you spend so much time learning different programs and after a while it's just a PITA.

Gerry has a program that generates code directly form Autocad ( free ) so you may want to try that out. Did i just say that after a while
trying programs becomes a pain.  ???

Dan,
Try attached dxf. Like I said the "magic wands" usually leave something to be desired. Here is a dxf that was drawn in less than 10 minutes.
Pic of the file when in LC mill also attached.

Dan,
What you show is  why  I am always saying that the "magic wands" for converting images leave something to be desired and I don't use them.
Some of the higher end programs work well. You would be better off just drawing that figure and inporting a DXF. You can fix some of the problems in LC
but would probably frustrate you and would take more time to do it than draw it.

JRSLICK22,
May want to consider what i did for covering the screw on my converted Atlas lathe.
Works great and was better than usiing a shower curtain rod cover.  ;)
