Hood,
Tried values from 20 to the recommended 200 still not reliable.

I will explore using my lathe ( by modifying the code for X and Z ) as it is very accurate and can run at higher feedrates reliably.
It could be a machine problem, ie; motor/use higher amp settings, the skipping is a real bear as you don't even hear it happen....can feel it if you keep you hand on the motor.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Desk cnc with mach 3

blake,
I have deskcnc but have not used it in a long long time. I don't know if Fred will entertain your question on the IMS forum but worth a try.
Not sure if you still need to pay $60 a year to post on it's forum.
I think there are a few others that use deskcnc and may be abe to relate if there are any quirks.

General Mach Discussion / MISSING STEPS HCIR
« on: February 27, 2011, 04:57:48 PM »
Having a problem with missing steps. Figured I would post and seek suggestions.
The complete program code has numerous use of the example problematic code. It is repeated in a simillar
fashion throughout the program. The attached code is just an example  which  may cause skipping ( X axis only).
I can only run the code reliably at 10 IPM. The mill is very reliable to 80 IPM.  Matters not if run in Cv or exact stop mode.
The code provides small combination X &Z moves. I don't mind running the code at a slow  feedrate for finishing but need to up the IPM
to save hours on the pieces to be done.

So any thoughts on the above ie; increase kernel speed .............?

The attached pics show the pathing , GREEN LINES, which will be used for testing by doing loops.

Kerry,
Make sure your mouse cursor is in the field when you hit the return key.
I just tried the ID wizard in both diameter and radius mode and works fine here.

Bruce,
You shoould first check to see if the machines  X & Y axis are perpendicular to each other. Also check the gibs are adjusted.

As single clamp in the middle of the plate may allow the Al plate to move when machining so make sure that is not the case.

If the machines axis are correct and the bolt is holding down the plate then you should be able to machine it square.

How much was it out?

Spinnetti,

I simulated the code in Mach that you posted and did not see any problems with it at all. It did not "wander off" in Mach.
Attached pic of a backplot of the code and  Mach screen.
Now if you are "wondering off" when actualy cutting the piece that is a very different problem.
It can be computer, machine, or controller related, but will guess  if using  steppers they are  skipping causing you to loose position.
Can't explain much more without more info on what is happening. ;)

So what was your work around?

From what i can see in some pictures of the Micromill it is nothing more than a Sherline with steppers put in an enclosure.
I would suggest you modify the existing or make a new controller. Should be able to reuse most components, but see what the power supply is capable of and purchase new drives.

problem I have is GAINING steps or length
In MAch3 you can do an axis calibration which you will find in the settings tab ( lower left hand corner of the screen)

Some one also mentioned a different board that could be dropped in so I could use mach 3
Mach3  provides step and direction signals via a PP or an external device like the SmoothStepper to your drives.

What controlling software are you using now? Are you using Mach?

Is there any other controller software that I could try with a Gecko G540?

Yes, but then why try something which will be inferior?  ;)

I like MACH3 but it seems kinda complicated for the most part
So are the others ........since you'll need to do similar configuration.
