General Mach Discussion / Re: Life Meter (No, Not Mario Bros)
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:18:29 AM »
A clock which turns on when a device is activated will record in a  most simplistic way and can be done in a more complex fashion if one so desires. Most parts have a predictable life and manufactures provide engineering info but certainly does not reflect exact
time line. That  provides an initial baselline which one can use and then refine based on experience and good engineering judgement and knowledge of the factors used in the guidelines.

The above is only one input for forecasting  and additional  criteria is required. Manny industiral places are  totaly automated
and use actual measurements in real time. The data provides for collection, analysis, level of alarm and applied action based on
engineered logic. In some cases corrective action is implemented.

The right level of data acquisition, monitoring, and logic  is required for meaningfull  application to a task.
The time and distance is useful but certainly not complete for what you want to do. All i use the time and distance log is to get an idea of machining time.  ;)

General Mach Discussion / Re: Stepper running rough
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:01:49 AM »
DAlgie,
Glad you found it. I often say that one should not "Play with Their Mouse" since that can create spikes during the driver test. Mach shares  time with Windows and anything which requires Windows to access a device can create problems. That is one of the reasons  I quit using a USB optical keyboard and mouse. Guess we can add a thumb drive to the list.

If swapping the drives dosen't help then may want to have a look at the drive input signal from the computer.
NOT THE DRIVE OUTPUT AS YOU CAN BLOW THE DRIVE! You can also try adjusting the mid band adjusting trim pot or disabling it.

Did anybody have any luck opening the file?

Opens fine here. There is a difference between what you provided as an NC and what the CAMbam provides as a dxf relative to how big the lettering is.
It is not 3/16" high. May want to try both  CV and exact stop as velocity modes. Assume the machine can accurately position for  0.00025 depth of cuts. May want to see how the axis works at .005 feed rate. I don't recall the slowest feed rate i have ever tried but i know there was a bottom limit where my steppers would run well.
Remember that if your starting the plunge at say .010" it will take you 2 minutes to get to the top of the stock surface.

Worse yet they go onto a forum and seek advice in solving problems with the software or their machines. That one really burns my ask!

If the tip is just .0002" ? then that will break by looking at it. I have tried down to about 2 thou and the point even breaks in Al.
Hardened recievers and parts usualy have the temper removed, are engraved, and then rehardened  or they are are done before hardening.
The tempering should be done by a pro with appropriate equipment. You should have a very slow feed rate to try and avoid chipping or breaking the tip since you want to have the cutter "cut" into the material  before it will move in some direction. Not much "impact" is required to break the tip.
As a test you may want to try a very slow feed into the material ......then inspect the tip to see if it has been chipped....if chipped then the cutting edge is gone and tool life will be short. You inpsect the tip with a microscope.
You really need an accurate machine ....there is a big difference between .001" plunge and say .0015" like wise for even smaller depths.
You may want to contact the manufacturer of the cutter and see what they recomend for the application. They will probably ask you
what the hardness is of the part.

Maybe i am missing something but looks ok when i backplot to CAD ( all circles have the same center point relative to origin ) and LC output code is the same for the first two steps when i create offsets using 1/8 and 1/4 dia end mills.  ???

I would be interested to find out if anyone has done a comparison with Mach3 with a motion controller like the smooth stepper vs. Wincnc

Easy answer.....price ........so much for Wincnc in my opinion.  ;)

I didn't see anything wrong with the code when I quickly backplotted it to CAD.
If the first circle comes out right, then maybe it's in the rapid move to the 2nd circle that things are getting off, so, you maybe slow the axis velocity down some and see how it goes.
