Hmm....let me play with it some.
The first thing is that on import it  is not comming in at Z=0, then it will gouge on a rough.

It is a polyline and that may be the problem. I say in the manual not to use them.

Need to fool with it.....so will post l what i find.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Use of tools in a turret?
« on: February 26, 2012, 06:58:03 AM »
Feel free to ask questions on anything in Appendix "F" or better yet just tell me that something is not clear.
In the quickie i don't go into any detail where the appendix does.  The problem with automating the turning of a part is that one needs to understand
setup, the coordinate system, the Gcodes, and how they all relate to one another. That is a lot of info and it's very easy to get confused.

The following should help you out. Just understand that no switches are being used and that it is written for a tool holder but the basics are the same.
If you want more detail about homing and the tool table then have a look at Appendix "F" in the LazyTurn manual which can be found in Members Docs.
Surely others will chime in as they use a turret.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Cant get motors to calibrate
« on: February 24, 2012, 08:25:49 PM »
200 steps/ rev of motor X 10 ( microsteps) x 20 screw rev / inch = 40000 steps per

- 200 steps / rev are the norm 1.8 deg steppers but there are others like .9 and even better
- assume you are microstepping at 10x
- with no gear reduction it takes 20 revolutions of the screw to move the axis 1 unit = 1 inch

Depending on the velocity you will define or desire, you may need  to use a higher Kernel speed. The kernel speed will be llimited by you computer.

It won't post code if you haven't defined the machining operation. If mach3 is not licensed there is a 50 line limit.
Just a few thought's that come to mind.

he wants me to make sure I have the instructions on how to manually change the settings in Mach3 to make adjustments to the cut path

Cut3d should produce usable g code for implementation by Mach if the correct post processor is used.
You should not need to do anything other than set the tool at some location and run the program.

SO

I am guessing what you are meaning is that he wants to know how to setup / configure  your machine.
Frankly, that should be in place before he even gets there and you should have done some reading ( like the manual).
All of this is not just plug and play!  ;)

Get your machine working properly, then understand the software that you will be using so the generated code is correct, then do some learning on how Mach works.
By all means do some trial cutting to gain experience.

Mach needs to know where it is in preparation to starting  from some controlled point in the program
It does that by cycling thru the program, now you tell Mach where you want to start. Mach now knows where it needs to go to
and it will provide the necessary move to that point.

Note that some of this depends on how you stopped the program.....

1.you load the g code program
2. click [run from here] and Mach will cycle thru the code
3.in the line: put the line number you stoped at
4.click the [run from here] mach cycles to that line
5. press cycle start, you will get a window asking to accept a prep positioning move ( mach will look at where you are  verses
what the point is in the code and provide a prep move to that point.)
6. When you click ok for the prep move you are accepting that move based on where your home position  currently is
7. mach now starts running from that point

Think i got it right, :D

You could get the image and write code such that you punch a hole on either side of the profile. What comes to mind is CopyCat which would allow you to follow the proflie using a
web cam and then you could go to a spot and do a Z move up and down and move on to the next spot or part of the profile.  CopyCat writes the code as you are viewing. Thus no need for CAD or another program. There is a manual for CopyCat in Members Docs and it is part of NFS and as such will require an NFS license to use ( if recall correctly).

There are other ways but you will need to explore them to see what satisfies your need and budget.

Sorry I can't be of more help,
