Wish I had a better handle of the proper way to tune and use the max rate for motors.

Can you post some specifics Ya-Nvr-No?
What kind of motors ...steppers or servos?

It would help me in a write up that I have been picking away at.

Bfive, hope you don't mind my post and don't want to highjack your thread.
Thanks,
RICH

Al DePoalo

Can you give some insight into why so many negative preceptions about BobCad exist?
It is the sales, the actual functionality of the product, or support?
I am curious and surely  others  would be interested in some insight.

Are you using a Dell?
Forget what my model # is but it just plain sucked for CNC using the PP. Worked fine with a SS.
Others may have a different experience.

What does the graph in the dirver test look like?
If there are a lot of spikes something is interfering with Mach's share time with Windows. Also the pulse signal from the pc may be the problem.

The pc I had put together which works great is as follows:
- Asus motherboard - M2N68-AM SE2
- 2 GIG Ram
- AMD 64X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.7 Ghz
- Asus graphics Card - EN9600GSO
- Rosewill PCI pp card - RC302
Your mileage may differ!

How did I know it would work? I didn't!
I had a deal with the company that put it together for me, that if it did not satisfy my needs in any way, they would upgrade or modify any part of the pc until it did. I would only pay for increased cost of a component. Best $50 fee i ever spent to have a pc put together.

You could also use a SS to eliminate a bad pulse signal.

General Mach Discussion / Re: PART CNC PART MECHANICAL
« on: April 10, 2012, 09:28:19 PM »
Alternative to this where can I find a laymans description of  conversion to cnc screwcutting with a list of parts

Would seem rather dificult to provide any type of specific list of parts for a machine which we know nothing about.
That said and think what your are meaning is what is required to convert a lathe to cnc.
There are a few threads on lathe conversions worth having a look at on the site.
You basicaly need to provide a screw which is rotated using a stepper or servo motor for the Z and X axis along with the appropriate controller.

CAM programs are like different flavors of ice cream ....what i like you would hate.
So take your time, have a taste of the different flavors. and then buy a  gallon of your favorite flavor  and enjoy!

General Mach Discussion / Re: backlash on Z axis
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:36:12 PM »
The typical drill mill spindle and rack combination is not very good for controlling the Z travel since there is play untill the gear makes contact.
I think mine was around 0.025" or so and that was using the sensitive feed gearing which helped.
Sometimes repeatability was excellant and other times poor.
Yes you could use BC, and maybe find a sweet spot, but it will never be right. Will just plain suck should you decide to do 3d machining.

A friend has a geared head mill which he applied a counter balance to the complete head with pulleys and now raises and lowers it very accurately with a small stepper and screw.  The head is probably 400 lbs.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Spindle Index Pulse Problem
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:21:29 PM »
Here is why testing at a lower velocity is worth trying.
If one assumes the acceleration, axis movement, and triggering are correct then any difference in the point of first contact would be the difference on the circumference of two marks due to variation of the spindle rpm.

For a 1" diameter disc:
800 rpm =13.3 rev/sec = 1.3 rev in 0.1sec
circumferential distance a point would travel in .1 sec =4.188"
( time of .1 sec somewhat close to the accel for 13tpi @61.4 ipm)
since 3/800=.00375 (.375%) possible variance of the rpm  then the contact point can be +- 0.16" off

Dropping the rpm to say 100 rpm the contact point could be off by +- 0.002"

So slower spindle rpm reduces the possible error of where the cutter is  in relation to the point of just starting the thread / scribing mark.

One should see a reduction in inaccuracy ...i would think

You may also be able to just do an axis move G1 Z.5 F.076923 and get a entry point and v groove on the disc. Then  pick up the thread and now do a
G32 move to see what the difference would be, but must say that you'll need to very meticulous on doing it. In the Threading on the Lathe Manual
on how to pick up a thread.

Just some thoughts on trying to find out what's wrong,

RICH
