Should be a very interesting build and topic and will visit over time to see how it all turns out.

General Mach Discussion / Re: More Z-axis difficulties...
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:46:55 PM »
A stepper can lose position and when it does it can be a small amount, a large amount , or just go off into the wind with a mind of it's own.

I am guessing that the problem is random. One could play around and deliberately add a few lines of code, maybe a number of dwells in the code so one can see if they could pinpoint something in particular that causes the problem or if it is progressive.

My generalization would be that in doing 3d milling the axis can't do the requested move in the time provided and position is lost, maybe once or can also be numerous times at a small amount. I think that it would be more pronounced for
finish cuts since the movements are smaller.

Try modifying your velocity and acceleration settings in motor tuning....50% less and see how it goes.

General Mach Discussion / Re: grounding your cnc
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:15:09 PM »
Jeff,
The difference I was meaning is relative to the cause and the affect and how a low impedance path may need to be different to a ground in the case of noise. Myth's come about from not understanding what is happening and become truths because for some situation something done worked.

Interesting you should mention about the conductivity of a ground rod. In industrial facilites the ground system is tested before installation and must meet certain standards ad certified on a continuing basis. The ground can be prepared to improve conductivity.

I'm not a "Sparky" just a dumb process / mechanical guy that has to deal with the Sparkies at work..........
we do like each other though and value the thinking differences. :D

FAQs / Re: Vacuum table
« on: October 21, 2012, 10:01:11 AM »
You have two different cases.
ie; You have a pump or you are going to size a pump system for the system.

If you have a pump then you will reduce the available negative pressure to address the variables associated with the system.
If you are sizing a system then you are using the same calculated system requirements, will be conservative, and optimise the system.

The available hold down force is simply the negatve pressure available times the applied area. In the end, the available hold down force required must consider pump efficiency, line loss, and leakage, etc.

Additionaly the hold down force required must address the machining forces. The machining force can be approximately calculated, but since the calculated value is very subjective, practical experience with a particular machining circumstance is
very valuable and would override calculated. Thus judgement comes into play and is very difficult to address different or numerous senerios.

Now note that i say "SYSTEM". The porting of the table is different for a small piece as compared to a large piece  or maybe you have a table desgned for both small and large pieces. The leakage rate varies and again subjectively one must
provide appropriate values in the calculations, and size other parts  accordingly.

I would strongly suggest that you have a hard look at vacuum systems which can be purchased ( be attentive to what they are used for ) to get a feel of commercialy available designed systems, use any practical experience from folks that are actualy using one, do some calcualtions within your capabilities to see what you want to do.

There is more to calculating than one would think....... ;)

There is a difference between grounds from an electrical  and noise point of view.

Electrical grounding should be done to satisfy your countries authority and local electrical code.
They deal with and provide for life safety.

Noise is a rather loosely used term, and for simplicity for this reply, i will just say that noise is an
unwanted signal which is part of or added to the original signal traveling on the same conductor or
recieved and travels on a conductor. Noise is created by the router and the intensity gets smaller as the distance
from the source increases.

Interference is the result of noise due to the intensity of the noise which can affect connected circuitry.

Grounding is done differently for noise as compared to electrical and again i use grounding  rather loosely.

Yes please do and save it as a version 12 DXF.
Time for pitza and beer, so got to go and will give you info tomorrow morning.

I could not open your  dxf file...something is wrong with it.
Is the attached pic a correct profile of your part?

But how can I create my own text in Acad?

You draw the characters usings arcs and lines. There are two advantages to doing this:
1. It will reduce your code from the 10,000 lines that you now have to maybe a few hundred.
2.As shown in the pic you can arrange the text so that spacing (color) of characters or word is appropriate.
Another advantage will be that shouid you want to do the letters in relief the tool one will be able to
machine around and in the letters.

If you don't care about the above, then just do what you have but it will look crappy.

No need to create two drawings as you can use layers to your advantage.
Additionaly you can name the layers such that they make sense as to what you are going to do with the layer entities.

Some other CAD programs allows one to explode text, such as  in the case of Autocad and then you can export  via dxf for use by LazyCam.
Microstation is a good example.

Something you can consider is to create your owne text using cad. They will be original and becuse they utilise arcs you will reduce
code a whole bunch and have much nicer machined text.

Just a few options,
