but no spindle speed is displayed when lathe is running.

You need to turn / click  the spindle button on to get the rpm to display.

Just somehing to consider on the rotation. If you have backlash it may be better to have it rotate in the same direction so  it is taken up.

A few choices are allowed in configuration. See "Rotational" selections above Screen Control on the configuration page  and have a read of what they do in the manual .

A CD painted flat black when finished makes for a nice index disc. The few that I have made never worked right until the disc slot width was more than what the manual calcs said the slot should be.

Since the individual axes move different distances the feedrates are different. The only time the feedrates for each axis would be the same is if the distances were the same. Both axes must change to maintain the controlled path ie; the linear move angle and for the above the change in x with repsect to z would be a value of 2 or otherwise the controlled point would not follow the coded path.

a retired engineer and now it's for hobby use so difficult to justify high outlays.

Change your thinking my friend ...........anything that makes YOUR retirement move enjoyable is worth it and need not be rationalised to anyone!
That's what you worked for all those years. It's your time, your income, your enjoyment.  

That said,

Free is usualy limited in some way.
MeshCam and Cambam would satisfy your needs and won't break the retirement fund.

BTW.....buy a nice set of magnifying glasses....maybe a high intensity light also.
