General Mach Discussion / Re: Hall Effect or Slotted Opto?
« on: March 29, 2015, 10:51:43 AM »
Agree with Russ. The Hall's are more expensive, make sure you look at the specs as some have faster repsonse than others. The Hall's are easy to mount and align so you can get away with an installation  that otherwise couldn't be done. The rare earth magnet I used was only 1/8" dia x 1/16" thick and was grazy glued to a pulley.

BTW, you only can use one / single slot and there is no advantage to multiple slots.

I don't use a BOB. Mach's rpm is good to probably 4 places is probably more accurate than your indicator.

Machtank,
Just post the update and I'll put into the 1st reply of this thread. You can't edit it.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Center zero setting
« on: March 26, 2015, 06:16:05 AM »
Could be a for a number of reasons and depends if you have switches or not / how your machine is configured.

You define the datum reference for the machining of the part. If you want the gcode to start at the center of the piece, then generate the code based on the center and surface of the piece. You can set your tool to that point. What follows after that is based on how the code was generated. I always look at the first few moves of the gcode to see what is happening.

Note: You define to the controller where Home / Machine zero is, AND , you also must define where the Part is.
If the part is away from Home, then there is a Work Offset. If the Part datum is zero and Home is also zero, then
Machine Coordinates = Part Coordinates.

Is there a G10 L__ anywhere in the code? That can alter the tool table.
I may be wrong, but think you must apply any tool change with the table open.

FAQs / Re: Cutting thick materials on a mill

Consider doing multiple depth cuts and a finish cut at full depth.

Share Your GCode / Re: new machine

Think you would need to write a macro to do that.
Maybe someone can chime in and do one.

( code to run back and forth)
G90 G80 G40 G54 G21 G17 G50 G94 G64 (safety block)
M98 P1 L100  (RUN SUBROUTINE CODE 100 TIMES)
M30

o1
G1 Y1900 F45 ( YAXIS TRAVEL AT FEED RATE)
G1 Y0.0    (RETURN TO Y=0)
G4 P 2  ( PAUSE or can use M1  instead of G4)
M99 (RETURNS BACK TO THE )
%

Check config for the pause  / dwell time so that it is seconds. You may want to use
M1 instead of G4 P2 , all you need to do is hit the cycle start each time, but gives you whatever time you wish to check indicator.

To be honest, I doubt mach 3's capability of threading because it likes one pulse per rev which leaves a lot of gray area between pulses

Threading will only be as good as "your lathe system". Have a look at figure 4.4.5 in the Threading On the Lathe Manual for accuracy basis.
Also the rpm indication can be very accurate, out to 4 places, and that was tested / confirmed with a  custom pulse counter accurate to 30 ppm.
If one can "almost" accomplish class 3A threads with a hobby machine, 0-80 and on up.........of what matter should one be concerned.

I assume also that accurate control of the spindle speed is required where 'Threading operations' are carried out ?

The more stable the rpm the better and set it manualy. ie; don't have a vfd trying to maintain the rpm while Mach is trying compensate for
rpm changes.

Mach4 General Discussion / Re: Mach4 Screw Error Mapping

if I can get someone in here with a laser or some other super accurate measurement system and I can map the screw or rack accurately
Look into folks that do optical allignment. ( 0.00078" per foot accuracy, well, make sure you understand the spec )
Screw mapping takes time and if opticaly done must be done using calibrated scales and equipment, else, maping is is only as accurate as the uncalibrated system.
Get ready to spend some money to have it done.
