General Mach Discussion / Re: 4 & 6 motor

Why should i repeat what is on the Gecko site?
The preformance will be different. You'll get higher rpm's.
Do you have a motor curve for the steppers?
If you know the name and brand look up the info on the motors,
and also note the voltage and current ratings for them. Additionaly if you know or can measure
the inductance you can use the formula's provided on the Gecko site.

Have another look at the site as it provides basics for stepper motors.

airbrush,
Need the screw thread pitch...or # threads per inch for the ballscrews.
Need to know how the steppers are connected to the screws. ie ; any gearing / increase / reduction?
Assume you will be microstepping.

So you are aware of it:
Now if you have a look at the Mach Manual you will find examples of how to figure the steps per unit.
Or if you go to members doc's there is info there.
Or if you use the axis calibration feature of Mach it find the steps per unit based on movement.

Dave,
Suggest you go to the Gecko site which has excellant information about wiring of steppers.

FWIW,
For real small holes do use peck drilling, but one of the things i used to do was allow the drill to create it's
owne center drill point. ie; I would let it dwell for a short time on the face and then proceed to drill the hole.
Also i use good old fashion "spit" as that seems to cling on and lubricate better than anything I experimented with.
Btw, I was drilling from 18000 to 60000 rpm range and down to #90 and smaller. And only buy good drills as the
other cheap ones are useless. Best I was able to do was with #90 thru 3/8" thk steel plate as a test.
That was done with the sensitive drill that i built.

Have fun,

threading on the lathe writeup link:

http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,13017.0.html

To attach a picture:
Below the reply box click the Preview button, in the window that opens
click the Additional Options, then in the new window by attach click the
Browse button (more attachments) and select the file that you want to
attach. Note only 4 allowed per rply and max allowed is 6000KB.

Rev 3.043.066 is reported to be buggy and not recomended.
Try something greater than .038 to .052....

The xml file is in the Mach3 directory. There will be one for the lathe,
the delfault one when Mach is loaded is Mach3Turn.xml. You want to post
the one that you are actualy using, so if you created a new one with a different name,
post that one.

For the breakout board post the manual for it. I personaly will not respond to
anything having to do with Chinese stuff as it just wastes my time and there are usualy
problems wit their junk. ( sorry just my opinion based on experience). So others will repsond.

General Mach Discussion / Re: A axis as spindle
« on: May 24, 2015, 06:13:53 AM »
Stepper is a bad choice for use as a spindle as the rpm will never be linear also as the stepper rpm goes up the torque goes down
thus no power at higher spindle speeds. Indexing fine but then configure A as rotary, but linear you need to put distance based on diameter if I recall. It been a long time since I played that stuff.

Hey Dickey,

Cool...always nice to make use of stuff one has. Now just make a band for around the chuck so can youcan index accurately.
Also use the macros to do offset drilling in the face. Great for model making. Have a look at some of the things I made for my
Atlas lathe.

Wilco,

You will find in members doc's a write up called Threading on the Lathe. There is lots of good info in it and suggest you have a read.

Manualy set the rpm on the vfd for threading. Mach needs a signal to read the rpm so index is used.
I suggest you post info on your VFD and breakout board so one can better help you.
Also post your XML file.
What version of Mach3 are you using?

Maybe consider a dual boot system ie; XP and Windows 7.
Just a thought..........
