I'm another one of those on the sidelines, but I'm thinking, he knows what he's doing and appears to of covered all the details/problems I can think of, so not much point contributing!

I managed to figure out two of the F's, but the third one was eluding me!

Bad day when one can`t slag a SAFFCB without someone blabbing it all over the forum.

Also interesting how a done deal on a mill has now changed to "potential".Have the Welsh moved up to East Lothian?

I'm going to keep quiet in future, as I'm now trying to figure out the FFF bit...

It is done, I'm just (trying to) keeping a low profile until I have it in my possesion!

Strange thing happened this week. I was looking at a potential mill purchase, and the seller showed me a chiron he'd sold, and said he was just waiting for some boneidol idiot to collect it  ;D

BTW, US digital have changed their international shipping to flat rates via UPS. You can see them at http://usdigital.com/company/ordering/shipping. Cost to UK varies from $46.68 to $61.51 depending on service, which is a lot cheaper than the last time I looked.

Looks like the server is very hit or miss.
I managed to see the pics (and saved the lathe ones for my reference!).

What linear guides are those you're using the lathe?
I'm considering converting an almost identical lathe in a similar way, and was looking at using more common Hiwin rails, however due to their height it means the carriage wouldn't then fit under the chuck. I doubt that would be an issue though, as I can't see me doing anything 6" diameter where I'd need to have the carriage under the workpeice.
I was also thinking about mounting the z-axis screw inbetween the rails.

Does your's have flats on the spindle?

Mine doesn't, and I was under the impression any flats would of been on the original pulley block/back gear.

How is your ball screw supported at the tail stock end?
Mine is machined and simply sits/runs in what would be the hole for the original leadscrew. It doesn't look as though it's secured in anyway, but I guess I could drill/tap it and come up with some method of adding a thrust bearing to hold the entire screw under tension...

Cheers.
Sounds just like mine, but I never went any further than taking the ballscrew cover of the Z-axis. From what I remember, mine never looked like it had any substantial bearings anywhere, so I guess they never changed that part of the design.
I'm weighing up a couple upgrade options, and it looks like modifying or replacing the ballscrews needs factored into the options.

Hood, as somebody who's removed the steppers, how were the ballscrews attached to them on yours?

Looks good. The electronics on runners is a nice touch.

Must have some Scottish blood in me, eh Hood?

I added 4 brass tipped screws
You've got a lot to learn. You could acheive the same thing with 3 screws and saved some brass and a screw ;)
