Pretty well instantaneous but there is a little oscillation as the spring settles out right after the slam. But I think it will be well clear of the material ... hope so. Might need to figure a way to dampen it without affecting the recoil speed.  ::) Its a bit worse when vertical.

How about using two springs with different spring rates, to minimise bounce?

I'm currently running .057 on the lathe, which was on Hood's recommendation for being the latest most bug free lathe version.

Only reason Mach ended up on the lathe, was at the time I retrofitted it, KMotionCNC didn't have good lathe tool offset support (it only had Z-axis offsets in the tool table for milling), however that's since changed and the only thing holding me back is lack of time to convert everything.

I'll be going the KMotionCNC route, as I'm using a Dynomotion KFlop anyway, so it's just a software change needed.

I just need to find time to sit down and convert all the Mach macros to suitable C programs, and I should be good to get running, but then all my G-code will need altered as there's a few subtle differences.

When you hit E-stop, for some reason the current tool offsets get removed, and if you then don't command a tool change, the tool offsets don't get re-applied. You don't normally have to even change tool, just re-issue the tool/offset change for the current tool.

It's one of several bugs, and one reason I'm currently moving towards not using Mach 3 on the lathe.
The other reason is I've had a couple random spindle stops instead of commanded speed changes, which resulted in snapped drills and everything getting knocked out of alignment. I still need to re-align my spindle after a crash last week.
The thing is, Mach 3 can run for months without any glitches, then just randomly crash.

Sounds like a noise issue, which is always a risk when using 5VDC for controls.

Have you wired everything with shielded cables, and making sure all the earths come back to a single central point with no earth loops?
You could try increasing the limit switch debounce setting, however that is really just a sticking plaster solution.

If you've not had any joy with the encoder yet, I just so happened to browse a thread where I'd seen the details of the encoder previously (I knew I'd seen photos somewhere!) - http://www.cnczone.com/forums/benchtop-machines/261754-cnc-post1775234.html#post1775234 should take you to the post containing details for the encoder.

This link should take you to the first of the posts covering the encoder - http://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php/topic,25493.msg181866.html#msg181866

I thought I had a photo of the encoder internals, however I can't find it in my photo collection.

The only time you'll get your password sent from SMF via email, is when you first register. There is an option to change it being emailed, however there are pros and cons to doing so.

All passwords are hashed when stored in the database, and are non-retrievable. The only way you could retrieve them is via brute force methods.

What lathe is it?

If you check out my Cyclone build thread on here, you'll find a post about how I was able to solder in the extra wires to get the B signal.

Have you searched over on the Denford forum for wiring diagrams?

Are you using a parallel port or external motion controller?
