Tweakie, I'm glad you have it sorted but interested in your on going investigation.  Can you elaborate any more on how you pinned the problem down and what components you used for the fix?

Yup, your problem will be between the control box and the z output shaft.  I hate to inform you but you are probably running a pirated licenses too.  You will get no more help here if that is the case and you do not rectify it.

Okay, 4000 steps per/10 microsteps=400  400/200 steps per rev = 2 full revs of the motor should move you 1 inch.  A feed rate of .5 IPM should make the motor turn 1 rev per minute.

Check my math guys,

If your cable is good and the connections are good it points to the motor.  I have a hard time believing you got 2 bad motors but that isn't impossible.  If you can swap your wires coming out of the control box and going to the axis motors for the x and z and x works in both positions but z does not work in either position the problem will be between your controller box and the output shaft on the z motor.  Are the motors the same size for the x and z? have you tested through all connectors with the ohm meter?

Are you running 1.8 degree (200 steps per rev.) steppers?

Hey Jim, I have not read the manual but are you sure it is one IPM or is it so one RPM?  I know the G201 manual wants the motor turning a very slow rpm to adjust the trim.  I wouldn't think it would be IPM because most machines are different and the same motor could be used on many different machines with different axis resolutions.  If it is RPM, you will need to do some math to get to the feed rate to program in to achieve that.  You will use your steps per value in motor tuning for each axis.  Just look them up and write them down.  Now do the math to figure out how many IPM you need to command to get the motors to turn the RPM Gecko recommends to tune at.

Also, I meant to say there are a couple of topics in the members docs board on steps per and backlash you may find helpful very soon.

I think this topic will help.  It explains the right hand rule.  If your machine does not follow standard convention your paths may be upside down, mirrored, or a combination of the 2.

Thanks Jeff, glad you got sorted.   :)  I will show this to Scott and Andrew and I know they appreciate the kind words.  There are lots of very good, knowledgeable people here too.
