Show"N"Tell ( What you have made with your CNC machine.) / Look Ma no dividing head

So I picked this lump of brass up today and thought "I wonder what's hiding inside this ?"

Threw an old Myford chuck on the bed of the trusty old KX1.1 and lobbed the brass in roughly on centre.

Bit of stabbing with a 6mm cutter got it to look like this.



Swapped to a 2mm ball nosed cutter and ran the intermediate file and sure enough this was hiding inside.




Ran the finishing file which does a cut at 90 degrees to the first and got this.



Still got a few tool marks but most will polish out with a bit of wet and dry.

Could have made it better with a less value step over of the finish tool but didn't want to waste a lot of time if it wasn't going to work.

Sneak preview of the new XK1 CNC ready mill prior to it's display at the Harrogate show new week, May 9th, 10th and 11th of May.



This is the display stand equipped machine as shown by ArcEuroTrade, the Sieg UK agent.



The New KX3 will also be on show, both will be cutting under power hence the enclosed cabinets.

Mike Milligan of Dolphin will be demonstrating the Dolphin software and Brian Barker and Scott Nicholls of Artsoft will also be attending the show.

Harrogate is the premier UK show, last years attendance was in excess of 26,000 visitors over the three days.

Two cross haired lasers [ no it's not a breed of dog ] mounted either side the router head at 45 degrees. My finger is over one so only the other shows.

The camera is picking the laser line up a lot fatter than it actually is, in real life it's quite fine.



Both lasers shining together, head is too low at this point.



Raise head.
Both lasers converged, bombs away. That is bang on under the centre of the tool and Z hight is exactly 40mm above the work.

Set tool hight, zero axis and open bomb bay doors.

In real life I can get between 5 thou and 10 thou of where I want to be, may not be accurate enough for some in metal but for the router guys who work from the start point then everything from that point is accurate, mostly outside shapes are discarded.

Won't suit everyone but it's very quick.

[Edit] the tracks in the chipboard as the outline of Phenolic brush rings out of large DC motors. It can make a complex ring with curved slots in about 2 minutes.

Show"N"Tell ( What you have made with your CNC machine.) / Test piece for an X3 mill

Loco wheel cut in EN8 steel about 3" diameter



Two cutters, 6mm to block out and 3mm to cut the spokes. 12 minutes and 23 minutes for each operation,
Could go faster but wanted to save the cutters.

Newfangled Solutions Mach3 Wizards / Wizard for clockmakers.

At a recent show we had a Sieg X3 on show running Mach 3 and it attracted a lot of interest in the various applications it can do, especially the wizards.
One question we were asked quite a few time was if there was a wizard for crossing out clock wheels ?

Basically this is one operation carried out by clock makers all over to turn a plate wheel into a spoked wheel.
I'm afraid I don't know a lot more but can contact some clock makers if someone wishes to have a go at doing the wizard ?

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / John S Seig X3 conversion

Part way through a conversion of the Seig X3 mill.
Many have done this using the original brackets but I wanted to get it as compact as possible. I think they look horrible when they look like Prince Charles



Shows both axis with motors fitted, X still needs the rear shaft shortening.



Start of converting the Z mounting, drive will be by HTD belt at 5mm pitch.



Ballscrews are by NSK supported on matched pairs of angular contact bearings driving thru Oldham couplings.

Still a lot to do, some things are unfinished like no X screw fitted at present although all the parts have been made.
