SmoothStepper USB / which versions of Mach and SS-USB for turn
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:03:07 AM »
Hi,

Working on my first SS based lathe. It's an old Danford Novaturn. Just wanted to know which versions of SS-USB and Mach are the best for lathes. Spindle motor is 750 Watt DC motor with 2000 ppr encoder. It also has an 8 position tool turret with grey code encoder and other usual stuff.

I am using Arduino with Mach3. Using Modbus sketch on Arduino Uno. How do you plan to use Arduino with Mach.

Yes. I've tried pokeys too. But not the latest plugin. Too many toys, too little time...

I am very poor at documenting things during work. I'll try my best to document this for all. Here are the photos of machine with existing controls.

try using

Code: [Select]
SystemWaitfor(inputx)
while ismoving()
wend

where inputx is the input at which you've connected your limit switch

I've retrofit a number of turret punches to Mach3. I use Mastercam and drill cycles to program the punches and tool changes etc. In your case there are no tool changes and if the punches are always in a rectangular array then a simple wizard could do the trick. Contact me at zafarsa at yahoo dot com and give me details about your setup. Maybe I can suggest a solution.

I am starting work on retrofits of a Novamill and a Novaturn with tool changers. Going to use Gecko G540 and Smooth Steppers on these two. Will post photos once these jobs are finished.

I find it more convenient to use keyboard emulators for function switches on a control panel. Just rip open a USB keyboard, pull it's card out and map it's pins with keytest software. Get the connector combinations for the arrow keys and hook them to my axis jog buttons. I use function keys F1, F2 etc. for other keys and program them in the screen designer or use the keygrabber if I want to use the original 1024 screenset. Complex functions such as homing etc. are accessed by assigning macros to keys.
