4 axis is fun. 5 axis is expensive.

dont dismiss the cheap stuff.  Flimsy but a great way to learn cnc and a platform to build/rebuild from.

Tripple check the left to right axis, normally X, but depending on how you setup the machine, the long axis could be set to left.  Verify that the X+ moves to the left and X- moves to the right.

Check the code.  Does the left movement have a - or positive number when it runs?

11 times out of 10 the motor is jogging the wrong way and needs to be reversed.

On a router the direction of the arrow moves the spindle in all those directions, on a Mill configuration.  The Spindle only goes up and down, the table moves front, back, left and right.  So by moving the table/material  the arrows will move the physical table in the opposite directions.  So left has to move the table right, down moves the Y to the column.

There are 3040`s out there that do in fact have ballscrews.  The 4 biggest downfalls of the 3040`s are number 1.......crap tastic drives.  Electronics are simply awful.  *hint* G540 it*
The Y axis or long axis is slung by 2 unsupported shafts.  I have grab my Z and deflect the gantry in both directions.  Still have done some fun works on the router.
3rd, and this is really dependent on purchase, but mine came with a fordum flex shaft type spindle.  Spindle I put on it was 10 times the price of the machine. Doesnt have to be.
and that brings us up to number 4.  Some of the 3040`s have long thin L brackets that tie the end plates and bed together.  Top and bottom.  Mine got new bottom plates.
Honestly, I have a old be it, high precision Minitech desktop mill.  I have more fun playing on the router.  Its just FUN.

Have you tried remapping the keyboard buttons?  CONFIG > System hotkeys

have not run some serious code with it yet.  Sucks I know.....  But I did use it to make a test video for some screen set changes I made for a 10 tool ATC air collet system.  Used the PIPO for the test so I could get it in the video and the machine at the same time.

Make sure you are set to constant velocity and not exact stop, see pic for CV setting.

Exact stop mode will make the machine stop at the end of each line and give you what you are describing.

Rich, I am sorry to do this, but switching the jog buttons in the system hot keys is going to cause errors when Gcode is run.

What needs to happen is when you press the X+ jog button in the jog panel (press TAB on your keyboard)  the spindle needs to the right its a positive direction (to the right).  Numbers get bigger, Moves to the left numbers get smaller.

If you just reverse the keystroke for the jog command anytime you run a code, the part will come out backwards.

So press the X+ on the jog screen.  The spindle should move right Like the arrow shows.  Left arrow , the spindle should move left.

If that is backwards,
Click on Config at the top.  In the drop down go to HOMING/LIMITS
In the reversed column for X  change the setting from a red X to a green check, or vice versa.
Click ok.

Now using the screen itself, CLick the left arrow spindle should move left.

Once that is done, you can re do Richs steps to assign key strokes to the corrected directions.
