I also am in a similar situation knowing very little about cam . I recently built a machine modelled after Joe's 2006 designwith minor mods .

I am currently finishing assy of a "hobbycnc" controller, all being well that should be finished this coming week.

So I will most likely try the trail version of Mach3. Through osmosis I know that the machine and solftware should be able to produce from a DXF drawing .I have produced a DXF drawing of a fret I would like to make .

The problem the fret has several levels and the drawing is basically two dimensional . How does one program the machine to machie the fret to the required levels. Do I need to redraw the drawing designating each level as a separate layer ?..... appreciate any help

Some years ago I bought a MAX-NC 10. 

From memory the software was for DOS, maybe WIN95 or 98.   I never used it but a friend did for a few small jobs.   I am now wanting to get the MAX-NC 10 out of mothballs and use it to cut small wood and soft metal parts in my small home workshop.  Will MACH 3 drive the MAX-NC-10 or is there something else?  Is TurboCAD compatible (makes DXF files just fine).  I use TurboCAD 11 for 2D drawing and previously used it to generate files for a ShopBot I had back when I had a big home workshop so I am not a complete novice but pretty close. 

I have not yet found a newbie forum here - so much to look at.  Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Hey guys.
I have made  a 4X4' router that I control with Mach3. I run 503 IPM rapids, and the machine works fineat 45Khz .Well  I thought  everything was fine until today.I opened Mach3 and clicked ,operator, check config.this is what I see ( You are using a higher Kernal Speed than is required by your motor tuning.
 It is recommened you reset the program to 25Khz mode, restart and retune the motors.  Failing to do so will negatively affect GUI performance.)

  If i go back to 25Khz about 325 IPM is all i can get . I can live with that speed ,however it's like driving35MPH . The router has run 500IPM since July 06 
without any problem.I use 3/4 & 1/2 HP PM DC motors that I converted to servos &Gecko G320 drives ,10to1 gearbox on each drive &all chain drive on X Y Z&A. All motors are tuned the same exept A ,whitch I am not useing yet. My question is ,what am i doing wrong ,what will happen if i ignore this message.

General Mach Discussion / 1000 CPR encoder

I have a 1000 cpr encoder on my X servodrive running at 2700 rpm. I need to know if I move the encoder to a shaft on the same X drive that only runs 245 rpm, will it work or will i need a different cpr encoder.
