I would suggest that you also reduce the refresh rate to 60Hz if it is not already. ( this is done from:-  Display Properties / Settings / Advanced / Monitor ).

Hi Rick,

My initial problems with missing / extra steps were with noise generated on the earth return / screening circuits. I changed to a single point earth, metal control box and of course screened cables for everything, which were only screen terminated at one end (except mains input). Although this improved the situation, as said earlier it was only fully solved by changing to a PC. Thinking back on the problem it may well have been the CNC interfering with correct operation of the the laptop which is not that well screened.

Hi Rick,

I had similar problems when using a laptop / switch mode power supply combination - my driver test was not too good though. When I switched to using an old PC everything was perfect. Could you perhaps try a PC and see if the situation improves ?.

Hi Benny

Your suggested product really looks good but before you invest too much time and money into any venture you must be sure of your market. You could perhaps fill a football stadium with people and only find one person interested in CNC controllers whereas from the same crowd you may find many people interested in say children's toys for example.

Hi again Sam,

Well I finally did it, took your advise, got up the courage and told her about the cheese board.

I showed her the plaque (she was really impressed), made all the excuses and even read out the declaration and some of the story which had escaped my memory.

The result, she forgave me, we had hugs and kisses and all was forgotten - then she took my credit card, went out and bought a new cheeseboard. (The new one is slightly larger than the old one - I wonder if Art has a larger plaque which he is willing to post the G-Code for).

With regard to the resolution issue :-

I use direct drive on 5mm pitch ballscrews in preference to geared belt drive. Here's why - 'Microstepping'. In my earlier days of X-Y control, microstepping had not even been thought of so steps per mm were at a premium (only for the acceleration / deceleration and mass of the moving parts). Modern electronics means that I get 200 x 8 steps per 5mm or 320 steps/mm which overcomes the acceleration of mass problems and although the microsteps are perhaps not that accurate the zero backlash of the ballscrews more than compensates.

I suggest You go for whichever solution is easiest for you to implement and do not worry too much about steps per mm.

Hi Richard,

All I can say is what I have done on my table, which works OK for me.

My limit switches, which are standard size microswitches, are fitted so they act before the mechanical stop is reached on all axis, however, if a mechanical stop is accidentally invoked the limit switches will not be damaged because they have a sufficient amount of extra movement beyond their actuation point. ( my stepper current is set to the minimum required so that no damage occurs if the mechanical stop is invoked ).

Mach allows limit switches to be configured in the setup so it is unimportant which is which end of the travel. My X any Y zero position is bottom left but Z zero is fully up. ( otherwise you could damage an expensive small cutter ).

As for the 'ref all home function' well I have not found any reason to use it as each job is setup according to the position of the work on the table and as I use double sided sticky almost all the time now the work is never always in the same place. ( this also distributes the wear on the leadscrews more evenly if the work position alters ).
