You may have accidentally created a corrupt .xml settings file.
 
Try Operator / Restore Settings... and select a backup from a date before your troubles started.

(the backup files are stored in the Mach3 xmlbackups folder).

I really don't want to get into a discussion about this but...  

Even with closed loop control a feedback of one pulse per rev is not enough for a controller to maintain spindle speed accurately enough for threading.

It's perhaps not ideal but that's the way threading has been done with Mach3 (one pulse per rev) .

Mach requires one pulse per rev, an index, to calculate and synchronise a thread. Mach assumes that the speed is constant even when the tool engages the
material and starts cutting. We all know that is never actually the case, the spindle always slows a little. Even with closed loop control a feedback of one pulse
per rev is not enough for a controller to maintain spindle speed accurately enough for threading.

Sorry Craig but this is not quite true - there are many lathe users threading this way.

if relying on the index pulse (once per revolution) even if Mach could close the loop its going to be that slow
to respond that it would still be unusable for lathe threading.

If you are just starting out then I would recommend Mach4 (it is the future). You can download and install / run the full version of Mach4 Hobby free of charge - it is run-time limited but it will give you a good idea of it's capabilities. If you are satisfied then purchase the license to unlock the time limit and away you go

Mach3 has been a little buggy lately, losing steps, dropping my soft limit settings, etc.

That is not a fault of Mach3.

Your steps per unit should remain the same (assuming your machined dimensions are correct) but reducing the axis Velocity and Acceleration of your Z axis by 50% (and saving the changes) may help. But if it is lost steps (as Gerry suggested) reducing the Z axis feed-rate may also help.

If you can repeat the problem then the DRO readings from the Z axis will tell if it is lost steps.

EDIT: Just read your post in the Mach4 section and if you think the problems you are having are bugs within Mach3 then please think again and perhaps read the Mach3 manual.

My Hungarian friend just copied my posted picture and then used Photoshop (or similar) to do the copy and paste. He did say that he could not believe his eyes so all credit must go to E.H.Adelson for creating such an excellent and reproducible optical illusion.

(I have to admit to being a bit dis-loyal but the Gcode was generated and the image laser produced using the Auggie / 57CNC Tempest planner and motion controller).
