General Mach Discussion / Re: Motor Driver issue

There will be no direct 'short' between the Pul- and Dir- connections on the driver.
However, the internal opt-isolators may incorporate pull-up/down resistors so the measured resistance may depend on your measuring device.

Show"N"Tell ( Your Machines) / Re: Controller and drivers

I think an external motion controller would be a better choice than parallel port operation.

You would need to find details of the existing motors and drivers as they could possibly be OK to re-use.

It certainly sounds like an interesting project to undertake.

Just a suggestion...

Remove the Enable wires completely. At this stage they are not necessary.

Check in your Mach3 Motor Outputs that you have the X axis Enabled and the correct Port and Pin numbers set. Also Step Low Active set.

Also check in Port Setup that you have the Port Enabled and the correct Port Address set ( the port address for your PCI card can be found in Win. Device Manager).

Hope this helps,

Mach3 under Vista / Re: Help with STEPS PER UNIT CALCULATOR
« on: October 05, 2018, 01:44:03 AM »
Hi Sono,

The most common microstep setting is 8 (or 1/8th).

The Gecko website has some excellent explanatory tutorials; https://www.geckodrive.com/support/step-motor-basics.html

So if I understand it correctly, if my Ballscrew is 12mm diameter and 4mm Pitch and it has one start, Lead (mm/rev) value on the file should be 4, right?

Correct  ;)

Mach3 under Vista / Re: Help with STEPS PER UNIT CALCULATOR

Hi ,

I see the confusion.

'Pitch' is the distance between the crest of adjacent threads and 'Thread Starts' are the number of individual threads.
Basically the calculation provides the distance the carriage moves from one complete revolution of the screw and this is defined as the 'Lead'.

You do not have to complete the lower part of the calculator to obtain the Steps per Unit.

Once you have established the correct Steps per Unit they can be checked by using the Axis Calibration feature on the Settings page.

I am pleased that you have sorted the Crop Circles  ;)

If you run the Axis Calibration feature (Settings page) you can check that your Steps per Unit are set correctly for your Y axis (use a reasonably large distance when testing).

To remove the Crop Circles;  In Config / General Config change the IJ Mode setting. Then Regen the toolpath and all should be well.

Ideally all Gcode containing arcs should contain the correct G90.1 or G91.1 (as appropriate).
