I have read that someone having the same experience applied more power to the stepper motor and that fixed the problem, what would your thoughts be on that?

Stepper motors should run hot to the touch (but below 60deg.C) if your Z axis stepper is running cool then you could try increasing the current by one increment.
Ideally, stepper motors have their rated current printed on a label and that is the current that should be set at the driver - a stepper motors rated current should not be exceeded.

Hi Chuck,

Stepper motors torque reduces with speed so heavy loads are best lifted slowly. If they loose steps on the way up then, on the downward travel, the axis will move to a lower position and this is the problem I think you are experiencing.

Reducing Velocity and Acceleration is usually the answer but if you can attach a spring (or better still a gas strut) to reduce the weight the stepper has to lift then it may help.

Does you Z axis have weight - ie. could a counterbalance or gas strut reduce the mass when it is travelling in an upward direction ?

Try increasing the Acceleration in Motor Tuning for each axis and save the changes - this will improve your overall Constant Velocity speed.

Use one of the Screen Designers https://www.machsupport.com/downloads-updates/screensets/ (Mach3Screen perhaps) then select the desired button and change it's properties to ‘Execute VB Script’ then save the changes and close the screen designer. You will then be able to add your own script to the button using ‘Edit Button Script’ within Mach3.

If you are using Port#1 for Mach3 then (from another of your posts) you need to set the Port#1 address to CFE8.
You also need to assign a Pin# for Output#1 (In Ports & Pins, Output Signals - the pin that is connected to your laser).

Hi Nik,

You can just install the new version over the top of the existing version and your settings will be preserved (however, make a secure backup of your Mach3 folder, just in case).

Hi Nik,

You have an old version of Mach3 there - go to the NFS website and download the latest version https://www.machsupport.com/shop/mach3/ - that will have the Save option that you mention.
