General Mach Discussion / Re: Huge Threading Problem Help
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:04:49 PM »
Thanks. I'm using 3.042 from about a year or so ago, maybe a little newer. I switched out the motor to my old one and it seems to be working fine.

I've been cutting threads with this machine in all types of material for years and years, so I know there's nothing wrong with the machine. So my question stills stand, when the RPMs drop below what mach thinks is acceptable WHY does it start to cut a taper?

General Mach Discussion / Huge Threading Problem Help

OK I think I've posted this before years ago and don't think I got a response and can't find the post.

Anyway, I'm trying to thread some 304 Stainless on my Converted 9x20 Lathe, the piece is 4 1/2" in Diameter External Threads 16 TPI at 1000 RPM with a 16 TPI Thread Insert. What happens is when it's cutting it's losing some RPMs and I know the RPM and strength of the motor is the root problem I need to solve BUT what Mach does after the second or third pass cutting is it knows the RPMs are slowing, obviously, but instead of stopping or self correcting it starts to cut at a taper and ruins the threads. Why does it do this, why would it move X inward as it's cutting. I could see it moving X for the positive to make the cut more shallow thereby making the RPM stabilize, but CUT A TAPER IN??? Please help.

This is your first post and this is what you have to say? Pretty lame.

I'm not going to explain it as I have a feeling you're a troll.

I'm no expert but I remember some people have problems with laptops not giving out a consistent 5V, that may be something to check.

Also what do you mean converted jpg? I use CAD/CAM to generate G-code but never heard of jpg, as that's a picture file? Please explain, always looking to learn something new.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Need HELP Steppers Stalling on Shallow Moves

Himy, I just reread your posts to me and I've still got some questions, I'll try and make this simple. I haven't done any grounding yet, I've kept the machine under 10 IPM and these days that's too slow so I'm going to do the wiring today.

120V Ground = Lug on Metal Housing Box
12VDC Negative From PS Side One = Lug on Metal Housing Box
12VDC Negative From PS Side Two = Lug on Metal Housing Box
Lug on Mill = Lug on Metal Housing Box
220V Ground on OUTPUT of VFD = Lug on Metal Housing Box
12VDC Negative Power Supply for VFD from it's circuit board  = Lug on Metal Housing Box
5VDC Negative Power Supply from BOB = Lug on Metal Housing Box
Shield Wire from Signal Cables for Limits Switches and Accessory Wires = Lug on Metal Housing Box
Shield Wire from Each Stepper Cable = Lug on Metal Housing Box

If the above is correct then the only thing I don't get is where you say to ground the Stepper Drivers, the Negative 72V going into it is from the Powersupply and I mention that above as grounded, do I need to tie in the A- and B- of the drivers that go to the steppers? Thanks.

Sweet, that worked, I think originally when I tried what you said I forgot the 'call' part as I overlooked it as part of your sentence. What does the number '3' reperesent in your example? I already got it working, just curious. Thanks.

Sorry all I need is the percent. Thanks. I just tried it without the second set of asterisks and it didn't work. Do I need the '(' in there? I just reread your post, I don't understand what OEM for Jog % does. I don't care what it's currently at cause I'm making buttons for different jog % rates.

Howdy, I hope someone can help me. I'm adding some buttons to my Mach Turn and I need the VB script or whatever to change jog speeds. Basically I'm making a button so I can change from 10 IPM to .3 IPM when I'm parting. Thanks.
