General Mach Discussion / Help with new machine I am building

Hey guys,
Building my second machine. straight to the point.
First problem
My machines in MMs calibrated everything all axis move perfectly but at the start of a program the z plunges to far. If I do G1 Z1 it moves 1 inch and not 1mm. units are set to MM and locked DROs is ticked.
Second problem.
I also have no home switches I didn't have with the old machine either and I liked it that way for now. On this machine if I hit ref all nothing will happen have to go to settings zero everything restart mach3 and everything is zero?
New controller is NVEM v2 running on windows 10 over ethernet.
