Does anybody have any experience with using Mach and Geko drives to drive a CNC Measuring Machine?

No drives they have been ripped out.

I would consider buying new drives and compatible motors. Where would I buy the analog to digital conversion boards from.

I need to get a clear picture in my mind

1) The step and direction signal from Mach will go through a conversion from analogue to digital and then onto the drives
2) The drives will have an on board power supply that is AC at a common voltage eg 220/380/460 Volts
3) Compatible encoders to the drives will be fitted  to provide feed back

I understand that this is not going to be a 1500 dollar retrofit.

Hi All

I have the opportunity to buy a big vertical boring mill for very little.

It has 3 kw Axis motors on it but they are AC Servos.

Would Mach be able to control these motors and if so what hardware would be required

Here is the deal

I had mixed up the big thick black wire (System/Motor Ground) with the encoder small thin black signal wire. As soon as I grounded the whole system and placed the thin signal wire in the ENC- slot on the drive the whole system worked. Yes the encoder has taken a bit of a smack but for me proving the whole system it is OK. I have written a small G code program with feeds and rapids and it seem to be going well

I am really gratefull for the help as I am a mechanical person and I find electronics a bit frightening. It is comforting to find a place where information is shared so freely

The motors run away once The fault light on the drives goes out on power up

I have included a picture of the encoder with wires.

The wires of the encoder are wired to the following Gecko drive terminals

Encoder                    Drive
Thick Black                ENC-
White 5 VDC             ENC+
A Red Wire               Phase A
B Brown Wire            Phase B
                               Direction   Wired to Pin 2 on Breakout Board
                               Step        Wired to Pin 3 on Breakout Board
                               Common   Wired to 0v on Breakout Board

Once I turn on the system and press the reset switch (Err/Reset and ENC+ ) The motors start by themselves I must have something wrong on the control side of the drive but I have no idea where to look. Any help would be appreciated.

I have found the problem. The reset switch has to be held in for atleast 3 seconds

Hi All

I have finally got round to wiring up my gecko drives. When I power up the system the fault light on the Gecko Drive will not go out. I have Err/Reset & ENC+ wired via a reset switch.

Should the system be grounded or earthed.

Does anyone have any ideas about what is wrong

Thanks for the reply. E-bay is out for me as I live in South Africa and as far as I know Paypal does not accept our credit cards something to do with fraud.
I already have a 220v electrical cabinet fan. Would this be enough to keep the drives cool.

General Mach Discussion / Heat Sink for Gecko 340 Drives

Hi all

I am building a panel for a digitizer conversion

Do I have to place the drives on a heat sink or can I just bolt them to the chassis plate of the panel and then have a fan blowing cool air over them ?
