Hello,

I'm curious if anyone has any knowledge about or examples of using LUA scripting to message an industrial device via Ethernet/IP via explicit messaging.

I've done some scripting of RS232/RS485 ASCII serial read/write via LUA, however I'm interested in querying data from a servo drive on a periodic basis. This servo drive can respond to Ethernet/IP explicit messages, but I am not sure where to start in LUA to generate these communications.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Mike

Mach4 General Discussion / Mach 4/LUA Ethernet Explicit Messaging

Hi All,

I'm just curious for the time being if this is possible. I would like to interface Mach 4 to a servo drive which can communicate over Ethernet/IP. The motion control signals will be Step and Direction coming from an Ethernet Smoothstepper, however I can also pull diagnostic information over Ethernet *if* there is a way to form and transmit a generic ethernet packet using LUA in Mach 4.

I did something similar a few years back using the serial port to pull diagnostics out of a servo drive and that actually worked great, now I'd like to repeat the endeavour using a different servo drive and Ethernet/IP.

So the question is: does anyone know of a LUA function or library which supports read/write over Ethernet?

Thanks much,

Mike

I built an ATC with Mach 3 using an Arduino Mega and Modbus. It works pretty well, although Mach 3 had some goofy stuff between Cypress and the Modbus functions. It is also an excellent way to pass in analog values to Mach.

Awesome! Thanks!

How do you "unpackage" the profile when you want to restore it?

Thanks Steve!

Knew there was a good reason, just didn't know what it was. Making a backup is super easy.

Steve,

Wish I could buy you a beer and just pick your brain - I have a feeling it would be a very interesting conversation. Thanks for the detailed reply! I certainly learned something. Never would have thought that single block would be difficult.

The motion control we do at work is continuous real time programming with dynamic adjustments to trajectory. Pretty much the polar opposite mindset from CNC and robotics. It is great for say, following a target based on a camera input, or adjusting a valve position to maintain a pump head pressure, but it is very bad at complex pre-planned trajectory. I did write a basic G-code interpreter for it for fun a couple of years ago, but it mostly parsed the code and used the existing motion instructions to execute the moves. I can't really wrap my brain around calculating CV and stuff like that. I did get basic cutter comp programmed though which I am proud of. It wasn't 100% perfect, but it did work!

Thanks again for the great reply!

100% agree with everything Craig said. I'll add that which setting them up isn't terribly difficult, AC servos are more complicated than steppers. Choose a brand with really good manuals and technical support.

I am helping a guy who bought the bottom of the barrel Chinese AC servos and the manual is 1/3 Chinese, 1/3 Russian, and 1/3 English. Even translating all those pages didn't answer most of the questions we had. I like DMM Tech, have heard great things about Clearpath (but have never used them), and would recommend Delta or any high end name brand (AB, Seimens, etc). Automation Direct also has a line of entry level servos with good technical support.

Weird... I got an email with a reply to go look at a forum link that I couldn't open and now that response is gone?

Either way, still interested if anyone has info  ;D
