some people have problems setting up mainly do to not having the instructions for there machine

i had same problems with mine if came with a disk in Chinese couldn't find mach 3 settings   

finally i found x axis  16 - 17
                   y axis  4 - 5
                   z axis  6 - 7
                   A axis 8 - 9

emergency stop 10  all port 1

hope this helps ventric is a easy software to get you started draw like d paint and it converts it to g code

get your self a cheap xp pc with a parallel port Laptops go into sleep mode and shouldn`t be used even on high power settings your asking for problems, i picked a small desktop up with xp installed £20 local and installed mach3 and other programs needed for my electronics for cutting circuit boards out, still use a cad program to cut out wood i`m doing a rebuild atm a billings banckert model boat that was a poor quality build

why would you want to just manualy lower z down to your work leaving the bit loose so it can push it up and down then set and tighten

Easy Program to use and learn on is VCarve you can trace pictures and ajust lines ceate shapes with a couple of clicks and txt check out some of the tutorials

i forgot to add a stop for tool change but you will work it out txt and bat vbit the rest 1.6 end mill tool sorry was at work when i did it on laptop 2mm thick cut
