FAQs / Help with maths wanted

Hi everyone
I am writing some Gcode and am a bit stuck withs a maths problem, could do with a little help
I am engraving characters, Imagine a matrix of say 4 rows by 4 colums of characters each called by individual subroutines
The characters are numbered 1 to 16 starting from bottom left
in one parameter i want to enter a character number, i then want to work out row and column numbers into to additional parameters
i have been using,FIX,FUP and ROUND but never seem to be able to decode correctly every box in the matrix
can anyone tell me of any other functions available or even post a bit of code to help me
