General Mach Discussion / Re: Understanding steps per and config
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:08:17 AM »
I believe YOUR steps per unit are correct.
10 rev / inch of screw x 8 usteps x 200 steps / motor rev= 16000 steps per unit ( inch).
Assume your gibbs etc are all adjusted just so.
Lower the velocity to 50 and accel to 10 and work your way up until they skip, then back off that by say 30%.

If you can, get a motor curve and compare torque to speed for different wiring.

Hi, thank you for getting back to me.

I think that K2 uses 1/10 micro-stepping and that's why they have those settings, however on my setup I am not looking for turbo speed, but the best settings my mill can run at are steps per 16000, velocity 25, accel 5, which is slower than a home built router I had made years ago. Don't get me wrong it's working just fine as-is, but slow, and the material I am cutting is PVC Plastic sheets 1/8" thick at most.

Thanks again

General Mach Discussion / Understanding steps per and config

Hi,

I recently purchased a new K2 CNC Mill (KT1414) frame only, I already had the electronics for it. When I received my mill I also received a cd with settings for Mach3 (*.xml) that I just dropped into the Mach3 directory.

After going through this config and making sure the pins were set correctly, when I tried to move any of the steppers they would start to move VERY quickly and then stall. I contacted K2 to try and see what I was doing wrong and they really didn't have much to offer other then verifying the motor tuning settings. This is what they have for settings:

Steps Per = 20000
Velocity = 100.62
Acceleration = 30
Step Pulse  = 5
Dir Pulse = 0
They also have kernel speed set to 35000Hz

The setup for electronics that I have are:

1 KL-DB25 Breakout Board
3 KL-4030 Micro stepping Drivers set to 1/8 micro stepping
3 LK23H2100-30-4BM 495 Oz inch steppers
1 KL-320-36 36v/9.6amp power supply

The Mill lead screws are all .1 pitch (1/2" 10 tpi)

I have calculated that the steps per should be 16000, I am trying to figure out where they have 20000 for Steps Per, standard steppers 1.8 degree 200 steps per rev.

I am hoping someone could help me understand this

Thank You
