I searched for a while didn't find any info on implementing automatic tool diameter measurement and compensation.

Any one see this type info anywhere?

My theory of operation is something like this:  Have a probe like a fork shape mounted horizontally in a corner of the router
with know distance between the forks.  The tool would start in center move one direction touch fork then move opposite
direction touch and edit the tool table automatically.

Thanks for any help!!

Mike

For a fast easy retrofit stepper motors are great, less wires less problems.   I have a Bridgeport with steppers runs perfect.  The drives you mentioned should be ok.  Have a friend that ran them on a wood router then bought the Chinese drives that have a built in power supply ( on ebay)  he said they run smoother and less wires with internal power supply.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share.  You have built quite a 4th axis!  How does your balancer work?  I will have a few projects coming up soon that I will need to balance electric motor shafts.

Very nice progress on the machine!   How are you doing the tool carousel indexing and keeping track of it in Mach?  Do you have any feedback from the carousel to know the current slot when Mach starts?

Thanks

Dennis

In your situation I would say jump in and do all of it yourself that way when some things goes wrong you will be able ti fix it quick.  Ask the questions and we will help with the retrofit.....

I have a PCchips board running is a router for 4 years now!  I'm using a PCI video card.  I never had any good results with on board video.  U can use your board with on board video but with a video card and disable the on board VGA in the BIOS.

What stepper drives are you using?  Check with a meter if you have the step and direction signals going to the drives after the breakout board.

RC,

Did you run the Electro-Craft drives with Mach3 yet?

I got a power supply on eBay just need to keep checking when one you need comes around.  Here are more pictures of the setup,  I used the pc case that had the computer in it to hold the break out board drives and power supply.  I have IMS drive they are pretty much exactly the same as the Gecko G251 they are 3.5A 35 volt.
