SmoothStepper USB / SS and Laptop
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:23:11 PM »
Hello,

I am looking at getting a new computer for my 4x4 cnc router.  Right now I am using a win7 desktop but am planning on switching to a laptop.  Was wondering if all laptops work.  Also what specs should I be looking for?  This laptop would only be used for mach3.

Right now I am looking at standard 14" screen laptops from mostly Dell.  Looking at right around 6gigs ram.

Also is there any advantage of using Win7 home or Win7 Pro?

Thanks Eric,

General Mach Discussion / Wear Compensation - Mastercam 9.1
« on: February 15, 2012, 11:22:43 AM »
Hello,

I am trying to get wear compensation to work on my 3axis cnc router.  But every time I turn it on and I 0.01" or -.01" in for diameter wear in Mach3 it does not change the cut size of the part.  I have tried wear and reverse wear in mastercam.  Is there something special you gotta do in mach3 to get wear compensation to work?

Here is my program:

General Mach Discussion / Mach3 and a Laser.
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:52:02 PM »
I am just wondering if anyone has had any experience building a laser engraver using mach3.  Also how hard would it be to have a router/laser into one machine.  Maybe have 2 computers and 1 machine and have a router and laser head mounted on there.

I already have a cnc router that runs off mach3.  And it dont run all that much.  And we need to get a laser engraver.  And its either spend 10,000$ or buy a C02 laser and put it on my router if that is possible.  Also what kind of software would u use to program for a laser.  Right now I have mastercam for my mills/router and lathes.

General Mach Discussion / Finding the middle of a circle.
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:05:12 PM »

I have these 1" Dia. X 1" Long Plastic Peiced I mill a oval threw.  But the Oval has to be in the middle.  I think there is something in the offset page about finding the middle of a circle but I dont understand how it works.  So if someone can please show me how it works.  Pretty much all I want to do is use my electric edge finder to locate the middle of a round bar.

Thanks Eric,

General Mach Discussion / Making mach3 pause b4 it cuts.
« on: January 12, 2007, 02:59:37 PM »
My spindle takes about 20 seconds to get up to higher rpm's and mach always want to send it into action b4 its there.  im always needing to pause feed it.  and then starting it back up when the rpm is up.  Any suggestions would be great.

I am using mastercam verison 9.1 as a cam program.  im also tring to figure out why mastercam wont output the right rpm to my router.  I type in 24000rpm in mastercam and the gcord it outputs always says 2000.  I always half to go in and change it.

General Mach Discussion / VFD Speed Control
« on: November 22, 2006, 09:36:12 AM »
So i just finished up installing my VFD.  My spindle is a 24000rpm spindle.  The VFD speed control uses a 10v signal to tell it the speed.  But some reason i cant get it to go the right speed that mach tells it.

If i set mach to max 24krpm and tell it to run 12krpms its is actualy running at 15krpm.  But if i twist the nob on the speed controller going to the VFD so that its running at 12krpm instread of 15k then it runs slower than 24krpms when you tell it 24k.

Id like to get it running within 500rpm of the actualy speed typed in.  Is this possable?

« on: October 20, 2006, 07:53:30 AM »
Well i just ordered a Ekstrom Carlson Spindle to replace my porter cable.  I just couldnt deal with the run-out any longer.

Can anyone give me a rundown on the best way to wire the VFD to mach3?  The simplist way.

General Mach Discussion / Easiest way to control spindle rpm.
« on: August 29, 2006, 05:16:10 PM »
Hello,
I would like mach to control my spindle speed.  Ive herd people talk about vfd's and stuff.  but i know nothing about them.  If anyone can point me in the right direction it would be great.

I have a 3.25 hp porter cable router.  About the only thing i know about it is it pulls 120v and 15 amps.  Right now its hooked up on a solid state relay to control on and off.

Thanks,
