General Mach Discussion / I don't know what I'm doing?

We are in the process of building a 3D router and we are at the point of wiring it up. We have our  mian power source in the cabinet  we have not yet mounted a 5 volt power source (not sure if it is needed) and our gecko drives for the stepper motors. Now I'm trying to understand what else I need. Ability systems is telling me I need a G-code controller in the control box and also a Indexer LPT. Is this true or is this something that can be in the computer tower. I like what I have seen on this site so far and don't want to buy anything until I understand the system better. We have Macs where I work that can do 2D files in dxf and we have solidworks that we can do 3d drawings on now the question is what else to do need to get everything talking to each other?
