General Mach Discussion / running external programs triggered by mach3 events

Hello,
I'm in need of running an external  program  whenever mach3 turns on/off the spindle.
Seems like mach brains might work, but I couldnt  figure out how to run any external programs.
So is it possible to run an external program based on mach events, if so how?
