General Mach Discussion / Backlash Settings
« on: July 24, 2009, 06:59:54 AM »
I'm new and I'm trying to fine tune my small wood working CNC router. I found that I had a first pass issue that caused the first pass to cut into the part by as much as .025 and then the remaining cuts would be spot on. I added Backlash to Y of .024 and this cleared the first pass issue.

I adjusted my machine so that the Y axis moves much more smoothly now. I had the V-Wheels too tight. I was able to reduce the backlash setting to .0095. I found that adding the same .0095 value to the X axis cleared up a very slight first pass issue on the X axis as well.

Is a Backlash setting of .0095 for X and Y a reasonable number for a CNC router designed for wood or should I continue to try to smooth out my machine movement? Everything looks right now including circles but it is hard to tell via the old eye ball method.

My Backlash speed is set to 100%. This seems to work but I wonder if this setting should be lower. ??? I did have an issue once during test cuts and jogging where the machine would trip. I turned Backlash off and the problem went away. I turned Backlash back on and the tripping came back, finally I changed the setting to .1 and the problem did not come back and then I changed back to .0095 and I have not experienced any more tripping issues. My machine is set to run at 60 IPM Max at the moment.

Thanks,

General Mach Discussion / Go To X and Y Zero?
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:44:18 PM »
Hi,
Go to X zero Y zero question:
I use a screen set that has an XYO button. If I zero the X and Y DRO’s and then jog off and click on the XY0 button the machine returns to zero for both X and Y.
My problem is when I enter adjustments for touch plate thickness and half the diameter of the bit into the X and Y DRO’s and then jog off and click on the XY0 button, the machine moves back but the DRO’s show a number like .0004 when I asked it to go to zero.

Here is my touch-off technique:
1.   I touch off of the bottom left Outside corner of X.
2.   I make the correction for the plate thickness and half the bit diameter.
3.   I select the X DRO and enter the value with a minus sign in front of the number.
4.   I repeat this for Y.

Example: I touch off using a .062 bit and a .01 thick plate.
1/2 of .062 = .031 + .01 = Total .041 DRO adjustment in the Minus X or Y direction. (-.041 Enter) I'm not sure if I'm using a bad technique or I have a setting issue with Mach3.

I was also thinking that it might not make any difference if I select Cycle Start from a point other than X and Y zero. (???) No matter, it still bugs me that the machine is not moving to the position requested.

I hope this makes sense. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bill

Hello,

I am brand new. I have a CNC router that I purchased recently. I have a touch off plate set up and working correctly. Currently I am using the "Blue Screen" and have a script loaded into the Auto Tool Zero Button.

I probably have this all wrong but the way I see it, the Blue Screen Set allows you to make corrections to the touch plate thickness for Z via a input box on the screen but I do not see any input box for corrections for tool radius on this screen for X and Y. Edit: I just learned that you can add a line into the script for touch plate thickness but I still think I will need a window to input tool radius. (not sure) ???

Objective: I want to use my touch off plate to find X and Y and be able to input the tool radius into a correction window.
I do not know how to make screens or scripts and I would like to download a screen and script that does this. (all tricks and techniques are appreciated)

Note the Blue screen has a neat setup for a center finder device but I do not need this. I just want to use the touch off plate for X - Y and Z.

Thank You,
Bill J.
