on mill you can use Z but it not recommended you can hit material with tool and damage your spindle (done that not my my kids) P.S. do not unplug joystick when mach is running and machine drivers turned on it have a habit to run away in  minus direction of axes (that woes a panic with no limit switch or nothing)

but the forse of hidraulic is much gtather then you think(I have same chunk) and minimum of working hidraulic preshure is 13bar Traub safety protocoll .
ps. movment of my chuch is 20mm so make the keys space biger and consider to make keys in difrent dimenzion so then you can turn lot of difrent dimenzion you can see my pet here

If you unplug usb jojstick while drivers is on and Mach too, mine axis Xand Y just go to negativ(minus) side and hit dead end weard but that is moust likely plugin.

Hy Graham,
some little question about servo drivers from motioncontrol I read somewhere that I need to calibrate drivers to work with there servo motors and I don`t have oscilloscope did you have to do it your self? or it works straight from the box with no problem.
Do you need encoder on the motor or driver can work without them at all.

Thanks for giving info about motor size nema 23 there was very Little info about them.
