General Mach Discussion / Re: Tangential Knife Setup
« on: December 09, 2009, 06:36:03 AM »
Hey,

Iam using Mach on a tangential knife table.

My Z axis is pneumatic so in the config I have selected 2.5D. As there is a time delay for the ouput to activate a relay then to work a actuator what I have done iin my gcode set my z+ to 200 and retract to -200. The way 2.5 D works is that any Z value in the minius ie -1 the output is activated. The +200 down to -200 up when using feedrates of 5000-10000mm/min is time enough to up the knife rotate to a new heading and then go down. My Tangentail setting is 35 deg and +400, so when running with the z down at +200 the tangential setting will retract to -200 if >35 deg moves.

My A Axis steps/per are the same as yours 5.55555555555 etc. I have got some gears and timing belt to make it a 10 steps/per but have not found the time to set it up.

So the key here is to take a look at your feedrates and set your z codes large enough so that it creates some dwell time for the z to get up, the A to rotate and get down all before the machine starts to feed again.

There is an issue with Mach 3 in tangential also. The tangentail moves only work well on G1 moves. So if you have any G0 moves in your code change these to G0. I have found that the A will rotate when the Z is down on the job when a G0 is present.

Iam praying for the Mach guys to work this bug out in some future updates.

I have set my A axis to high vel and acc setting as you have however due to the little bug with rapid moves it has been no point to run it so fast

If you need an other help, I can check my machine settings and get back to you.

General Mach Discussion / Re: New REV
« on: November 10, 2009, 07:06:50 AM »
I am going to upgrade my machine tomorrow with the new versoin and smooth stepper plugin. I did see that the SS plugin fixed the G28.1 bug after execution.

The was a tangental controll bug  where the tangental would only work well on G1 moves. On G0 trajectory moves, the Z axis retract over X deg did not work.

Theree as also a minor issue where on  a G0 or G1 X,Y move if the next line trajectory move was > Z lift degree's the Z would plunge first before retracting to move to the correct tangental trajectory. I understand how Mach is following the Gcode correctly for the plunge -Z200 however it would be great if trajectory planner could look one line ahead

Like
G0 X100 Y200 (Finish of Cut)
G0 Z200 ( Retract Knife)
G0 X200 Y200 (Rapid to position to start cut)
G1 Z-200 (Plunge, however trajectory angle from previous line rapid is not aligned for next line G1 move)
G1 X300 Y 150 ( Z retract as per lift angle setting and aligns for correct trajectory)

This is a great forum, I read a lot of the posts to learn more and more about this great software.

Hey Tweakie,

Where are the updates, I'm hanging to see what you can cut up with your laser.

General Mach Discussion / Re: Different speeds on lines and arcs
« on: October 04, 2009, 06:00:50 AM »
Thanks Hood,

I to have converted all my shapes to arc's to get rid of all the stop/starting i tangentail control. I have done way with all the G0 codes so that the knife will not spin in the bed. The next wil fix for me would be to look ahead to the G2,G3 codeafter my rapid G1 so that the A can orientate itself for the next cut.

I'm awaiting a fix. I have just go a quote in for a commerical cutter at $82K. I have been patient however now that I have staff running the machine all the quirks rear there head which see's me spending a lot of time tweeking it so the bugs do not tear up the material.

Can't wait for a fix.

Hi Hood,

Do you have anymore info about the tangentail fixes?? Like a release date?

General Mach Discussion / Re: Tangental Cutter problem!
« on: September 16, 2009, 06:06:34 PM »
I have just been through my old messages to Brian,

It seems this problem occurs on G00 moves. If I change the Z to G01 moves the Z retracts before the A spins.

This was a bug from last years rev and it seems as it was forgotten in the latest rev.

I have let Brian know so he can do the fix in the next rev.

General Mach Discussion / Tangental Cutter problem!
« on: September 16, 2009, 06:38:05 AM »
My Fabric sutter is having some issues.

It is a 2.5D pnuematic Z axis with tangental A axis.

The problem is that after a cut the trajectory planner starts to rotate the knife for the next move before the Z Axis has lifted. Iam using a Z Gcode  of -200 to +200 with a feed rate of F10000. This is to provide time for the Z to go down prior to a cut and the same for the lift

Watching the gcode running once the cut is complete and the code is calling for +200 and before it reaches 0 where the Z should lift, the A axis is rotating to a postion for the next cut.

I have attached a short video of the problem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6stJyMRDmkc

General Mach Discussion / Re: Bar code scanners?
« on: June 27, 2009, 05:15:44 PM »
I have a old USB bar code scanner kicking around.

Does anyone have a solution on how to convert it to the serial port or have it recognised as a com port??

I did think that there was some software available that could recognise a USB port as a virtual com port/

Thanks

Hey Karl,

I'm out of the office until next week. I will check my setup and post my config for you. Off hand I think my homing A- is 0 and A + 360 deg. I do have a speed set to 25%. When I reference A yes it stops once the switch is activated. I have no offset select, meaning it does not go + or - after the limit has been activated.

Hi there,

The guys from the forum here have been great.

I have had several issues along the way and at present my machine has been running great.

My A axis stepper is dual shaft, meaning a shaft on either end. I have fitted a round disk to the shaft approximately 50mm dia. To get some kind of good accuracy I have drill a 0.5mm hole in the disk and used cnc4pc optical switch to do the homing. Accuracy is to +1 deg. I'm waiting for the encoder input on the Smooth stepper for real accurate homing.

So to answer your question. Add a optical swicth to your A axis. Set up homing for the A axis and you will be good to go.

I did have a recent problem with my A axis gaining up to +10 deg after a run of cuts. I had purchased gears to gear my A axis so that there was a hole number of steps/deg. However only a few weeks back I installed the latest updates of Mach3 and for the Smooth Stepper. The machine has been running great

If you have any other questions, I would be happy to help out. The moderators/folks on this forum have been great help to me in times of frustration. It is certainly a good learning experience. My machine is now a blessing to use in our workshop and as I have all our patterns created it is just a matter of rolling out the material, loading gcode and hitting cycle start. My next project is a webbing cutter using a hot knife and stepper for cutting webbing/tapes to set lenghts and quantities.
