General Mach Discussion / Re: Mill going off centre

Sorry been away for a while.Got going again yesterday.I took your advice and reduced feed speed, spindle speed etc and was able to go the whole day without losing position once.I have to admit I was going hell bent for leather with the machine. The faster the better.Gotta learn to have patience ;)

It's the way the guy who made it for me set it up.I manually set my x,y and z.X all the way to the left.Y all the way forward and Z as high as it can go.Then turn on the spindle so it's locked in position.Using mach 3 I load the " home code" .Zero everything.Run the cycle. The drill head then moves to the centre where I again zero x and y.That's how I get my zero.I know it's a bit tedious.Wish there was a simpler way.

I have a seperate code for zero.I just load that, run it and it sets itself in the middle of the table at zero.

Hi there.

I'm relatively new to all this cnc and milling stuff but after a lot of research and tips from people here I got things up and running.I'm currently using a desktop milling machine to cut pistol grips.I can cut 1 set out of a single piece of wood, first doing the top side, flipping it over and cutting out the underside and here begins my problem.

Instead of constantly changing drill heads, I cut out about 10 sets for the topside, change the drill and cut out the underside, but somewhere along the line the machine seems to go off by a few mms.I go to home before I start every piece. It's only when I cut out the underside that I see the holes not lining up.Is it possible that home is changing by itself ?.I've tried doing topside and straight away flipping over to do the underside and it turns out perfectly which means the code is good.It just seems that if I do a bit of repetitive work that it goes off.I noticed yesterday that from the 10 sets I made, the first 5 or so were perfect, after that it seemed to be going off a little bit more with each new set.Anybody any idea why this is happening ?

Thanks

Vinny

This is the type of finish I'm trying to achieve.

I've uploaded the gcode as well.It involves firstly cutting out one side, then flipping the piece over to finish the underside.Hope you people can help me.I've done my best over the last few days to try and figure out all this new stuff on my own but's it's a bit too much for my simple mind  ;)

Thanks for all the replies.I can cut some grips out using files that the seller gave me,but it's the engraving of logos or designs that I really want to learn.I've been making a few grips over the last few days and they seem to come out OK.A little rough around the edges but sandpaper sorts that out.I know I could just make the grips and then have them laser etched but because I know the mill can do it,I'd rather try to do everything with one machine.I'll do some more searching on the forum and see if there's some guides that'll help me along.

General Mach Discussion / Noob question.

Hi there,

This is my first question so please go easy on me.I've searched the forum for some help with what I'm trying to do but I'm not really good with all the terminology.Obviously I'm not as smart as I thought I was  :P

I recently purchased two mills. There's no markings on them so I presume the guy made them himself.I've got Mach 3 installed on both computers connected to the machines. He gave me a few files to get me started but now that I want to make my own designs,I'm totally lost.

Basically what I'm trying  to do is make wooden pistol grips and then put a logo on them.I have a few files that will cut out the grips but that's where it all comes to an end. After that I know I need to make another file with a design to etch onto the grips, but to be honest, looking at all them numbers scares the hell out of me  :o .Is there anyone out there willing to help this poor noob get a headstart.

Cheers Vinny

Hi there,

Nice to be here.Having recently bought two mills complete with computers etc,I finally decided to put them to some use but I might as well be looking into the abyss because I've no idea about coding and the like.I had a look around the sight and it all seems very informative (if you know what you're talking about) but I'm absolutely lost. The guy who sold me the machines included a few files for me to experiment on.Took a while but I figured it all out in the end.Now I want to start doing my own thing but ain't got a clue where to start, which has landed me here.i'm hoping someone here will point me in the right direction.

Cheers

Vinny
